Just saying howdy

Hi All

My name is James. I live somewhere in Idaho. I'm an "old guy." My son and I both enjoy our "joint" tuner car hobby. We both have 1992 AWD Turbo DSMs. Mine is the super rare Laser RS AWD Turbo model, and he has an Eagle TSI AWD Turbo model.

We are sick of replacing the cruddy stock ECUs, and are researching how to run them off of Evo 8 (or similar) computers.

Some of our interests are speed density, modifying the stock 14b turbo with a 20g cold side, and larger exhaust housings with ported waste gates. I am swapping my MT for an AT, so I am wondering about using an Evo 8 (or similar ECU, like an 02-04 Lancer or Hyundai Sonata AT ECU) to do double duty as a TCU, and shifting with a Sonata or 3G Eclipse Sportronic shifter (having a couple different shift maps would be fun)...if that is not possible, there is always the Kiggley mod for full pressure manual shifting without a TCU. If anyone has some insight into these ideas, please chime in, and direct me to useful threads, provide examples, or PM me with your input.

Anyway, just saying howdy.

Best regards, James

Hi NJ9MR

Ya, us old guys. I'm 56. I'll have to dig up a couple photos of our builds. Lets see if I can upload a few.

Thanks NativeEvo

My son and I do not have current photos. The ones pictured are from the past two builds. We "recycled" the maroon 92 Laser RS AWD Turbo (ex drove down the side of it), and the white Talon TSI AWD Turbo (Blew a timing belt), as we only wanted two DSMs, and decided that having our own spare parts stored away was a better way to go. I now have a Black 92 Laser RS AWD Turbo, and my son has a black Talon TSI AWD Turbo. I am swapping the 5sp MT for an automatic (we have an increasingly large pile of formerly good-rebuildable manual transmissions). My son might do the same after driving mine to see if he likes it (we both have really bad back problems). We plan to do the Kiggley mod (hard-wires "manumatic" shifting instead of a TSU, unless someone here knows how to wire the trans up to the AT side of an newer ECU), and we plan to swap out the crappy DSM ECUs for Evo8 or similar "better" ECUs, and run speed density, and maybe flex-fuel. Should be fun. Anyway, thanks for chiming in....
