Evo 8 Buying Needing Advice

So im looking at purchasing an evo 8 2003 (gsr). The car is currently needing an engine rebuild, bearing has spun out. The guy that im buying it from is currently rebuilding it, will be dyno'ing it, installing coilvers and refurbing it. He owns a reputable garage close to me.

The odo also has 67,000km and I ordered a vin check (paid $80),and says it has done 87,500km on it from 7 years ago. The guy also doesnt have any service/maintenance books to give me.

Is it worth purchasing an evo that the km's may have been wound back with no service books to give, has anyone had any experience in buying an evo without books?

Sounds like a lot of headache, is it possible the current owner doesn't know about the mileage discrepancy?

it is a bit of headache, i sent him the import document that said 87,000km from 2013 and all he said was 'interesting bro'. I think it's best to probably not end up buing it but only looking for a red evo and this is the only one I have found where I live. He also stated that 'Once bottom end is done it will be like brand new so 20000kms difference shouldn’t be an issue bro'.

Welcome @Adam Visconti

Yeah, this EvO looks like its had quite the history. Buying from a private party might suit you better. After all, this shop may have acquired this EvO strictly to turn it around & make a profit

Keep us posted on your search & if you have any links to the EvO, that you want us to look at, please do!

Cheers, Joe

Thanks mate, I was also looking at this one. It looks very clean, low km's and logbooks/service. The only problem is that it is interstate

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...4494401/?Cr=19

Thinking of trying to getting a lower price as id have to spend money to travel interstate but it looks decent. Not to modded as well

Edit: Or this evo 9 https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...-5964869/?Cr=7
I have messaged the guy about a couple weeks ago but he hasnt responded, but it has decent km's for the price I wreckon.

The 2004 looks really stock which is a good thing. Even a picture of the engine bay which was good!

The 2006 looks nice as well but looks more modded & no pic of the engine bay

Both are worth looking into further

Prices look about right at approx $20,000 US dollars

Im defintely more interested in the evo 8 at the moment, I really want to go check it out and possibly get a lower price but since covid-19, Even if i bought the car I would have to drive back and self isolate....

But thanks for your input!

Ring up meek and ask about the condition of the motor. I wouldn't buy unless they are ok with you doing a compression test too

Unless you are mechanically inclined, I would stay away from any car that has a history of blown motors, snapped axles, etc. and other signs of hard use. Especially with no documentation, you will be chasing your tail trying to figure out what problem is causing what, and it is not a matter of if but when that will happen.

As others kind of hinted before me, the words "Evo" and "has a history" in the same sentence is not usually a good thing
