Question talking down the price??

what it do!

in no way am i new to this forum...but i didnt know where else to place this topic.

i always read how people go to stealerships and talk them into giving them a better deal on a new car. my question is...HOW?? what could you say to them to get them to lower the price?? i recently graduated tech school. air force. and will have a lot more money commin my way, since im getting stationed in Alaska. i think im going to trade in my 02 lancer and get an STI or WRX. im still taking the evo into consideration...so dont flame me there.

anyways..how do you lowball a dealer? kus id love to.

Price is subjetive to location and dealership. Set up a few dealerships for pricing. Go to the showroom a few days before the end of the month.

-Treat salesperson/manager with respect
-Show you are serious in purchasing (deposit in hand)
-Believe in yourself that you don't have to buy the car (saves from impulse dealing)
-Leave with their best offer, and they'll call back with a better deal on the last day.

What he says is very true, especially the last one! Do not ever go into a dealer with the impression you are going to walk out with a car; that's what they want and expect, so the games begin.

Make sure you let them KNOW that you are NOT buying the car today, and you DO plan to think all the numbers over and compare dealers. Share other dealers quotes with them if they are higher than other dealers.

You can't MAKE them give you a good deal; remember that. You'll have to just walk out of some dealers and count your losses in time, because some dealers will not budge. But when you get one that wants to make the sale, do the things mentioned above, you'll definately stand a better chance of getting the deal you want.

One last thing I can throw in there.. NEVER let them have your keys! That's a salesmans trick to keep you in the place thinking and looking at those pretty cars. I know all this stuff from having lived with and known several cars salesmen.

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your purchase!

thanks for the tips. hopefully more will post.

let them take my keys?? wow, never heard of that. wouldnt you just ask for them back?

i dont have all the money now..but id love to get rid of my lancer. its a beautiful car and ive dumped thousands into it..but i need something nicer.

another crappy thing is..im going to alaska..not too many dealerships to compare there.

thank you for the help. i want to go into a dealership and know what im talking about. or have a clue.

..considered cars..

WRX STI
WRX
EVO
EVO RS
G 35
350 Z
possibly SRT-4....but i dont see much aftermarket for it
does anybody know when the Spec C is comming or price?

I just got my 04 oz, and paid invoice price - 1500 in rebates.

The key to getting a good deal is to do your research. You need to know what that car actually costs. Never pay more than invoice for a car, you'll always be able to find a dealership who'll sell it to you for invoice.

Find the car you want, and test drive it. If the dealership asks if you are willing to buy today, tell them if the price is right. After the test drive, tell them to give you their best offer. When you get it, thank them for their time, and start to leave. Tell them the price is higher than what you think you should pay. Most likely, they'll ask you what you think is the right price. Ask them to see the invoice. Hand it back to them, and tell them that is the price you'll pay for the car, plus whatever rebates apply, and you are willing to sign right now. Most likely, they'll take it, otherwise, get up and leave. Tell them that if they won't give it to you for that price, there's a million other dealers out there, with the same car who may.

Also, Car dealerships like to talk in terms of Monthly payments. Don't go there. First, settle on the price of the car. Don't apply for credit until the price of the car is settled.

Finally, remember...You may have found the 'right car', but somewhere out there is the 'right car' at the 'right price'!

OR, go to Carsdirect.com You give them the price you will pay, and the car you want, and they go find it for you. But, sometimes its fun to do battle with a salesman.

sexecellent!!! thats what i was looking for. all the posts have helped.

see, i dunno about the 'million other dealerships' line. alaska has 4 subaru stealerships, 2 mitsu and 1 dodge. would, say..a cali or oregon dealership ship it up to alaska? i dunno, can they do that?

If you are willing to get a car shipped from Oregon there is dealer with 2 White 03's with Spoiler and sunroof that they are selling for 27k. I bought mine from them and it was a very smooth transaction...

this is what i did in the last 24hrs

well i bought my oz yesterday, its an 02 with 28k miles and no sunroof....

i say how much and they tell me oh we want 12,998 for it

i lost it and actually laughed out loud...

so i tell them i need them to take at least a grand off. and they tell me they can install a sunroof for a 1k...so back to 12,998

he calls me the next day at work, i tell him i'm making an offer on the 03 oz with sunroof thats 1k cheaper on carmax and it has 17k miles

he says, give me 5 min and i will call you back

5 min later i get a call and he says, alright, this is what i can do, i will take 2k off and install the power sunroof for free

so an 02, for 10,998 and i got a free power moonroof

they gave me a loaner es last night and they are install my sunroof over the weekend, i get my OZ on monday after work!!!!!

you have to tell them where you can find cheaper cars and tell them you are about to purchase something else....

hell, i got 2k off in cash and a free sunroof

Nice catch CentryLancer, but remember dealers have more room to "negotiate" on a used car versus a new car.

kdogg's right, used cars are CHEAP for dealers, as compared with new cars. The profit margin is usually 50-100% higher.

I got my evo8 w/ sunroof for 27,9K. I spend a whole day at one dealer haggling.. then walked out and went to another dealer. I didn't do so well at the second place so I called up the first place while still at the second dealer and explain I was going to sign for 28K (a complete lie)... the manager at the first place said, get back here now and 27,9... so I did it...
ps. I could have gotten cheaper, but I wanted white and they had to go 400 miles away to get it
