I'm sitting here at work and I'm tired and I miss my EVO. I know why I didn't buy the STI, sucky shifter and Suckier sitting position. And I couldn't fit into the back seat, not that it matters or anything (I'll be hollowing mine).

so what's your story?

 

STi wasnt out yet when I bought my Evo

 

Cant work on a Boxer engine as easily due to desgin. (I love the 4G63T)
I dont really like shifting as often as I would need to with a 6-speed. (Our powerband is more then wide enough to run a 5 speed)
The new 2.5 Ltr boxer isnt proven and seems to be knocking like hell on 91octane CA gas.
I dont like high bore over stroke ratio. stroker engines just feel better (especially since the Evo has a higher compression ratio.)
The handling and mechanical drivtrain. (I dont like computer comtrolled handling)
Drive by wire throttle is unneeded lag.

 

I could continue, but I really should get back to work.

 

I was planning modding.. So I did my homework, looked at prices, looked at the forums, and did general comparisons. The EVO lends itself to modification WAY more than the STI.

I also didn't like the STI interior or looks as much as the EVO. Then I drove them and like the EVO way better! At that point it was a no-brainer; for me at least. ;-)

 

basically looks: couldn't stand the gianormous hood scoop, prefer the EVO wing, the STI just looks fragmented whereas the EVO is more slick.

Also didn't like the seats or the proportions of the STI.

Finally, its all about the handling.

 

.. i went with the EVO because it's got a bigger back seat.. it was cheaper than an STI, and I kinda like the looks a bit better, although both are pretty nice.

 

1. the seat felt ok but wasnt impressed... the evo seats felt like it was made FOR me
2. sti's handling was good but evo handling is already praised... and i figured the extra 30hp advantage difference can be overcome with less then $1G mod.
3. my friend wanted the sti so i took the evo
4. the famous 4G63 block
5. better braking
6. no subie dealer near me but a mitsu 5 minutes from me. nearest subi dealer is 45 mins
7. car and driver review sti vs evo
8. evo was $1.2k more expensive
9. i knew i was going to mod; read the evo responded way better to boltons

 

1. Subi dealers wouldn't let me test drive, Mitsu dealers did
2. Evo won a large majority of compros
3. Evo thousands less
4. 4G63 proven engine

proven motor vs. new untested motor; better looks; less money; better handling and braking; better driver feel; STi scoop and tail shake in the wind ; could go on and on and on and on ...

 

IF STi shifter sucks take it in! There seems to be some schyno defects and people are in denial who has this problem and the end result is that they are helping subaru out It's a very small grinding noise that is only observed from fast agressive shifting. Oh well, to each it's own.

Any way the reason being is that:

1. 4G63 is proven to handle large amount of power.
2. No understeer compared to STi.
3. More direct shifter.
4. Evo has better steering ratio for this type of car.
5. Better boasted steats.

I bought the evo because they were first to arrive.

Now how is subaru is gonna counter the big bad EVO MR Spec C? We'll see how that holds up.

 

I wish the MR was here when I bought mine, but not enough to regret having it all this time. I am also glad I didn't get the STi because of the difficult tunability of the 2.5 L, which they blame mostly on "improper tuning". For some reason the Evo doesn't share this "improper tuning" issue.

 

1. It was right in my price range, the little costlier the STI was made a difference.
2. Local Dealer.
3. The history. Legendary name as well as being an established vehicle.
4. The handling. I live where there are many, many curvy back roads.
5. The seating, both quality and space.
6. The looks. I just like the Evo's looks. Much more distinctive than the STI. It takes a good look at an STI to know that it's not just a WRX. And it's just my personal opinion, but a turbo'd car should have a big intercooler grinning out the front.
7. This being my first Manual Tranny vehicle, I trusted the 5 speed to be a little more forgiving.
