Why buy better?

Why do people buy evo's? For $30k I can get the lancer I got and beef it up to go just as fast, and it looks nicer... I mean a Lancer ES is only $14k... that's $16k to spend on the performance and styling... In fact, why get an OZ edition either? You are probably going to get different wheels, different ground effects, etc... so why bother with the extra $2k for stuff you don't like? I'm just wondering why people spend all this extra money... Personally I like the looks of my car stock compared to that of the Evo, and for the money it was a better deal..

Because the Evo has stuff you can't/wouldn't buy.

Extra welds for body rigidity, 4 wheel drive, hollow camshafts, aluminum body, etc.

As for the OZ, all I can say is - some people like easy stuff. Personally, I liked the wheels and the fact that the body kit was already there for me.

PS - also, when on a budget, it's easier to rationalize buying the OZ and having a slightly larger monthly payment than buying a car and then paying for wheels and body kits.

Also an evo can whooop on a lancer even a built one with a few mods... best of all the evo will still be legal where the lancer won't be.

i second that - plus i say a lancer's max capability is WAY lower than an evo's max capability. you can get so much more from an evo in the long run.

Same would apply for BMWs then. Why buy an M3 when you can buy a 316i and make it fast.

By the time you're finished with adding all those mods and putting all the costs together you end up with a more expensive product.
I wonder how much would it cost you to adapt AWD to a regular lancer, not to talk about making your chassis stronger like the Evo one is. Engine swap (otherwise forget it, you'd spend to much fixing up the existing engine), suspension work, body work (fenders etc to be able to fit larger tires) and still, your car probably won't be as reliable and as good as the out-of-the-box Evo.
Some things are just better when bought from the factory.

No offense, but this is clearly from one of two types:

1) A troll
2) Someone who has never driven an Evo (or anything other than an economy car, for that matter).

I'm leaning towards 2... You just can't compare.

personally preference..some people like to fix stuff up and some like to have it already there...there are differences though between the lancers and the evo that you can't get from building up a lancer...also financial situation at purchase...personally i much rather have an evo to start with since it is hard to get enough hp outta the lancer engine to even get close to an evo...starting with around 120 hp compared to 270 plus you have awd and stock turbo

It's like my daddy told me as a kid...
"You can put $10,000.00 worth of parts in a wheel barrel and when you're done, you still have a wheel barrel".

be careful listening to your parents though - i know a guy who's dad told him that you didn't really have to change the oil as often as most people say.

so now he owns an STI with 8,000 miles on it's broke as$ engine.

that's right folks - if you've ever wanted to know how long you can go before changing your oil, it's a little over 8k.

sad, but true.

I've put 10,000 miles on a car without an oil change. If you beat the snot out of the car, you need to maintain it better. If the motor is running a constant speed for 4 hour stretchs on the highway, you can get away with it.
