it is the same frame and everything. if you were to strip the lancer and evo of the fenders, quarter panels, front and rear bumpers, hood, brakes, and wheels, you basically wouldnt be able to tell them apart. the evo, however, has about a hundred more strategically placed spot welds for chasis stiffness.

so your saying the evo's drive train will bolt into the lancers? that would mean that trhere would be a tunnel for the drive shaft, exhaust, location for the rear end, among many many other parts...

the evo's suspension and gas tank is what allows the center diff to run straight back. Not the chassis.

The chassis is the same but modified. On top of what petey said, if you pop the trunk of a lancer and an EVO, the rear of the evo has more suspension travel because the mounting point is higher (lancer picture from www.roadracemotorsports.com):

ahh I see the difference. I was thinking that you would swap over all the evo's components to a regular lancer..

These are unibody cars. They have no chassis or frame to speak of. They have a unibody shell. The suspension and engine are mounted directly to the shell, and not to an understructure.

The Evo has seam welding instead of spot welds in a few key areas. The Evo has heavier guage unibody stampings in the shock mounts and in a few other areas. The Evo has lighter stampings in other areas. The Evo has additional rib stampings and reinforcements in it's shell that are not seen in the Lancer shell.

So while the Lancer and the Evolution have visually similar shells, there are some very distinct structural differences between the two.

bringing this back from the dead

Would a regular 2002 Lancer have the same outer A-pillar as an evo?

(I know the 2003-2006 are the same)
