Evo Expense?
Evo Expense?
I've heard people complain about, or simply mention, the high cost of owning an evo. I don't own one myself, but I would like to know, outside of insurance premiums, what these high costs of ownership are.
It depends on your driving style. If you beat the **** out of your clutch, then get ready to pay a small fortune for a clutch job if you pay a shop to do it. I think most shops will charge you at least 10 hrs for labor.
Oil changes are more expensive than regular cars because we use Mobil 1 oil, and our cars take about 5 quarts per oil change. I use Mitsu oil filters, so those cost around $7 each w/ a new washer.
This car ain't no honda. It will eat a lot of gas if you have a lead foot. I average 23-24 mpg from on my commute, which is 25% city and 75% highway. I keep my revs under 3500 most of the time.
High performance cars require a little more maintenance than regular cars. Just follow the suggested maintenance guidelines in the owner's manual and you should be good.

Oh yeah, I forgot abou the tires costs. Our stock tires cost $210 each from tire rack. This is before shipping and installation! And they wear out in about 10-14k miles on average, depending on your driving style.
Our OEM replacement brake pads cost a lot too, I think around $200 per set for fronts and $200 per set of rears. Ouch. However, there are cheaper alternatives out there.

Other than payment and insurance, you'll have:
* fuel - premium fuel is required. You average anywhere from 15 to 25 mpg, depending upon how you drive.
* oil - synthetic oil is required.
* tyres - the stock Advans wear very quickly, about 10k mi. per set. They are also very expensive, about $250 per tyre. You can try cheaper aftermarket tyres, but they won't grip as well.
Other than that, it's no higher maintenance than any other new car.
The problem is because people trash their Evos, leading to very expensive repairs. Things like clutch, diff, engine, gearbox synchros, etc. go sour when people abuse their car. I'm not talking about driving your car hard. I'm talking about committing driver errors.
