Looking into buying an evo, current S2k owner

I have an Honda S2k. Its a great car and I love it, but the lack of room is killing me. I thought 2 seats would cut down on having to haul people around... it did. But I'm not properly situated to let other people drive. (I'll let you draw your own conclusion on that one).

I have owned a 98 Eclipse, never had a problem, great car, miss it actually. I traded that for a 2002 Eclipse GT... boat handling, slow piece of crap, with a crap for build quality. Its the car that drove me to get my S2k and drop Mits completely.

So hears the story. I bought my S2k with 23k miles, it has almost 40k now. My old Mits dealer wants to buy my s2k at original MSRP minus 6k for milage (there abouts). That's comes out $26k or so, I paid 22k for my car. The basic idea here is they are trying to get customers back who abandoned them for other makes and models. They also will get me the 5yr/60k mile warranty and 45k miles of free service.

Now the only reason I'm considering this is that this mitsu dealer service department bent over backwards for me trying to fix my Eclipse GT. That and wanting a bigger car that hauls azz with AWD doesn't hurt either. You ever try driving a RWD 2 seater coupe in the snow? Shiver... and not from the cold.

Bottom line, with all that crap I've read about warranty items being denied, and tranny problems, would YOU do it? Trade in the s2k that I have to beat off the teenieboppers with a stick and get the Evo? (you know i find it funny that at 29 I have 15 year old girls yelling they want a ride, I wouldn't, but it is funny). Performance is more my thing though, and a better ride in inclement weather since working for a hospital they don't have anything called a snow day.

Ok, is that incoherrent enough for you?

P.S. considered the STI, but the deal my Mitsu dealership is offerring kills anything I could get at Subaru.... Funny side bar, but I got my s2k at a subaru dealership heh.

As far as warranty issues, I've had zero problems at 17,000 miles. I DO know that I'd have big clutch issues if I launched a few times though (which I haven't). The evo is a blast to drive and to me, a much more "special" car as they aren't a dime a dozen like the Honda. But the trade-in price you were quoted sounds fantastic....I'd jump on it and have fun.

I'd get on it like...yesterday. You WILL miss the drop top but once boost comes up you wont, get one with a sunroof though. BTW..I thought 2004 Evo's came with 10 yr warranty..or is it 7? I've had no problems with warranty so far

get the EVO and don't look back all Eclipses are built here in the states, the EVO is imported from Japan. The build quality is much better. It sounds like you have a good deal going for the EVO and trading in your current car so I would jump on it.

You will be getting a great car with lots of room and 4 seasons ability that IMHO is the best dollar to performance ratio you can buy in a new car. If you don't mind Red or White go with the RS model for a little more fun involved. best of luck.

Don't get me wrong, I love my evo...But if I had 15 year old girls wanting to get in my car..... thats a tough one... A freind of mine has an s2k, and thats a really great car. Honda or not. If I had the money I'd own an s2k second to my evo.

Standard warrenty on '04 is 3 year/36,000 miles. If you want the 10year/100,000 mile one, it's like an extra $600(I think, I'm going off of memory here, I know for a fact it's not standard though)

I really can't vouch for the durality of it, as I only have 1800 on mine, but the clutch feels good, and I'm nice to it, I believe what others say, if your nice to it it's fine. If your planning on luanching the crap out of it, then it will go, and you'll should be prepared to get a new one.

I own both, and I say the two cars are night and day. If you go evo thats a kick *** deal what mitsu is giving for your s2k. Both cars are fun in their own way. You would miss the drop top and the quick steering of the s2k. But the evo's awd, turbo and more space would be a better trade off. Though I havent drivin the evo in snow, a set of winter tires are indeed needed, like what it says on the drivers door pannel.

If I was you, I would go for the Evo, especially since you need a car to drive in the winter and you need more room. The Evo is a very practical car in my opinion and it's performance is unbeatable for the price!! Good luck.

I own both Evo and s2k too.
26k is and amazing deal, I would be al over it. '02 s2k with 40k miles can be had for under 20k nowadays. Get an Evo, but you will most probably miss a Honda. I know many people who used to have and S2k, sold it to get an Evo, and now bought anouther s2k or thinking of buying one while still keeping an Evo

I was in the exact same boat as you. I had a 03 GPW S2000 that I just sold last week so I could buy my 04 EVO. I needed more room and two more seats at the time. Like said above the cars are night and day difference but I just love the low end power of the EVO over the S2K and handling in my opinion is better than the S2K. Either way they are both excellent cars and you should be happy no matter what way you decide to go.

I also owned an S2000 and traded for my EVO I miss the S2000 but the Evo is much funner. The both felt solid as a rock to me look at it this way you ll have a 4 door car that will feel like your S2000 handling wise and much more power.

Ya, i'm going in on Friday and see what the finale will be.

For clarification (s2k's are not a common honda, as someone stated above. I see more evo's in my area than s2k's) Sorry, had to comment on that one.

The deal if I choose to do it would be 10yr 100k power train, 5yr/60k bumper to bumper, 45k miles worth of free service.

This is being offerred through the dealership only as far as I know. To get back lost customers supposedly. They have had a ruff time being a mits dealership lately. The new eclipse doesn't appeal to the younger crowd like the older ones, their too expensive, too slow. The cheap cars like lancer has to compete against honda's, Hundai's(sp?), and toyota's... and Honda has a huge aftermarket for the civic's.

Basically according to the sales manager in an effort to regain lost customers they are willing to buy any 97 or newer foriegn (non U.S) vehicle at BASE MSRP when the vehicle was new minus mileage. Base MSRP on S2k is 32800. Mileage deduction varies on car's condition (there is always a catch). The flip side is my s2k looks new, runs like new, and retains an excellent resale value which is why they were willing to do the $26k trade in. I have till next Tuesday to get everything settled, ie buy it or not.

What I'm trying to find is the fine print, the catch, the caveat if you will. I know there's one here somewhere.

I don't race, I don't do clutch drops. Every clutch I've ever owned has lasted me 45k + miles. I have been known to smoke the occasional ricer... but you don't have to dump the clutch for that. Either way I'll let you guys know by next Tuesday .

that free service does NOT include oil changes! Not on my 04 RS according to service manager. You should ask these specific things in writing!!!

just be aware, stock Evo does not compare to modded versions. and if you modd, your warranties maybe voided, just a thought!

s2k's are nice, though choice...

Wait a few months and get an MR... It'll be worth the wait (plus the ACD, front LSD, etc. etc.).

It does include the oil changes. It does not include brakes or tires.
