Remote Starters: Bad for your car?

So I'm thinking of getting an alarm before I invest any more money into my car. I wouldn't mind the whole remote starter thing so I don't have to go outside in the cold. However, are they bad for your car? I'm not sure how they work, but I know you start the car without the key in it. Just wondering if it's worth it...

If you have an automatic they work great no probs from any that I have seen, If you have a manual then forget it... It can work but can be VERY bad if car is left in gear to the tune of totally ruining your whole starter assymbly and/or jumpin a curb and wrecking your car (yes it has happened many times).

Well from experience I have installed alarms and radios in car since 97'. I have installed autostarts in manual cars. I would find out if the driver would leave his or her car in gear when parked if they say yes they I would never install it. As for me I have never had a automatic car and I have had remote starts in all of my cars. You can do it if you want but be careful after someone else drives they might leave it in gear. For a few extra buck you can have them wire a switch in the car that will sense if the car is in gear and the feature will not work

Exactly what i was thinking .. . . all in all i do not think they are harmful unless it boils down to user error

All I will say is nuetral safety switch. WIth one you will NEVER have a problem. Yes there have been manuals with remote start that have had problems but thats more human error of incorrect install then anything else. A nuetral saftey switch senses the position of the tranny and if it's in gear it wont activate the remote start feature. Go for it!

I have a Viper 800ESP alaram on my Eclipse GST manual tranny with a homemade neutral safety switch and have NEVER had a problem with it. It is great fro those colde months to prewarm your car.

I have a manual with a remote start on it. Never had any problems with it but i leave my car out of gear when i park it. It will stay on for 10-12 mins at a time and i can have it run cycles like every hour if i wanted to. Also if you step on the brake, open the hood, or rev the engine past 3000 rpms it will shut off. You can also use it like a turbo timer. Before you turn off the engine just hit the button on the remote and take out the key. It will stay on for a couple minutes then shut off. I love it. It really helps in the summer when its really hot outside, keeps it nice and cool and it only cost me $50

On my evo I have to put the clutch down before I start the car for some reason does this mean a remote start will not work? Or will this be my current alarms settings or something?

There is a little sensor behind your clutch pedal. Unplug it and you can start the car without pressing the clutch.

remote starts can be programed to turn off after ... 5.. 10 ... 15.. 60 mins. from the time u auto start it... the key must be in to drive the car but once u step on the break w/o the key in it will shut off.
