You really SHOULD get springs and retainers as well. The stock springs are pretty much precision set to the stock cam geometry to avoid wear and tear on the valve train from mechanical contact (inherent to the cam on bucket design of the 4b11 top end)...this makes the springs really insufficient for use with anything other than stock cams. In fact, I typically recommend replacing the springs even if using stock cams...the problem you run into there is that stock cams for the 4b11t seem to be soft...increasing the spring pressure, even mildly, seems to wear on those cams, believe it or not, causing wear on the cams themselves rather than on the head. I have NOT seen this issue with aftermarket cams.
