a "stock" evo costs $50-60k USD in england, so an extra $25k for that car with isn't bad at all

You need to recalculate your figure for a stock Evo in the UK, it isn't as high as that.
and I have told most of you guys the reason why, but it obviously doesn't sink in, and the info is lost in all the merge mess somewhere I am sure.

For starters you don't pay tax twice
what do you think VAT is?
it is Value added tax, which is 17.5%
so you need to remove the tax from the OTR price (On The Road) and the tag and title and dealer / shipping fee.
NOW you can do the conversion to US dollars.
you are looking at around $38,000 to $45,000 in the coversion at the MSRP price.
look at the cost from evolution Imports for the evo VIII that cost is about right, and that is for the full spec.
SAYC, intercooler sprayer, 6 Speed gearbox, better bolstered recaros, Auto Climate controll yada yada yada.
there is just the warranty issue with the import like that and not to mention they convert it over to Left hand drive.

so you're trying to compare the actual cost of the cars if you were to buy them in the US is what you're trying to say? i am talking about purchasing one in the UK the price you would pay, which is the OTR price, the equivalent of our OTD price here. seeing as how that car cannot be legally registered in the US (as far as i know, at least not easily or cheaply) this is the only way to compare price since it is the price in the market for which it is sold.

evolution imports, last i knew, was in big trouble for doing what they were doing. people who purchased cars from them had them comfiscated because they are not legal even though they said they are and they were getting sued for it. also if you go to their web site you can see that the site is from 2002 and their last update was from 2003.

the price i mentioned was to put things into perspective rather than actual costs if you were to buy. comparing the price in the US to the $85k price mentioned makes it sound like you're comparing the cost of an evo to a viper, and even though it's a big difference, it's not that drastic, more like comparing the price of a corvette to the price of a viper. still a good chunk, but not rediculous

It is all proportionate to the cost of living.
I used to make $20 - $30 per hour when I lived over there.
Here I make if I'm lucky $16 per hour which equates to only 8 to 10 GBP.

if I was still living over there the best deal for me would be to import the Evo from the US, yeah even though it is a watered down version it is one hell of a bargain, you would be looking at paying around 15,000 GBP for an evo.
what we really need to find out is how much Mitsu japan actually sells the car for at wholesale, to countries like the US and UK.

The cost of buying one new from a UK dealer was around 40k pounds OTD (this includes the Value Added Tax) and that would equate to somewhere around 33k pounds minus the VAT i.e. $61,000 USD simply based on the exchange rate.

Even though you could avoid paying the VAT you would still have to pay US import duty (and possibly local State tax when you register it ?) if you were to buy one in the UK and bring it over to the US. So, in reality, you are still taking about Viper/Porsche 997 money when all's said and done.
