As far as an investment, any car is going to lose it's valve. The bimmer will cost you at least 15K more than the Evo. Even used you are looking at the same price differents. BMW should be worth more money used than an Evo, you paid much more for it.
For me, is the price different worth the extra money and I would have to say no. Bang for your buck, the Evo is the best valve out there today. The reason I would not buy a X is because the all the problems/recalls assiocated with new vehicel lines. I'm not knocking it, it is just a fact. Just my 2 cents.....

Yes, the M3 costs a lot more, but it will be worth a lot more in 4 years (or 6 years time). I reckon the money I will actually lose over 5 years on the M3 or IX will be about the same, so it all evens out over time; it will just cost me more upfront if I buy the M3.
I'm not looking at either car as an investment. I just want to pick the car I'll be most happy living with for the next 5 years.
if I had a choice between an Evo or an M3. Well....cmon. BMW all the way.
Sure the Evo's AWD and has a Turbo.
But RWD and an aftermarket Turbo'll do nice as well. But saying you'd rather have a Mitsubishi over a BMW is silly.
Think resale

I may be a little silly in my thinking, but I buy a car simply because of the desire, not the resale.
Not sure if I would ever consider strapping a turbo on an E46 M3
I just sold my 2001 M Coupe w/ S54 engine to buy an Evo MR. To me my goal is to own some of the 'must have' cars of their time. The Evo is next on that list. To me its not always refinement or what the neighbours think, money is not really the issue.
After the Evo I will pick up the E92 M3. And after that hopefully a 911 Turbo.
So, its not 'silly' IMO to want an Evo in place of a BMW.....I just did and it was a well thought out decision.

i am going to get my IX before winter and drive it in the winter, i tell you what i was real close to buying a m3 but lucally the dealership saw me and wanted nothing to do with me (i was on my way home from work, rebuilding transmissions, diffs, misc driveline, so you can imagine how i looked) i had a lot of cash on me so it wasent that they just treated me differently because i worked for my money, but its better now i have a new evo inbound awd is much better in the snow than rwd and i do have a question winter is bad for the evo because? blissacks included
Running the Advans in winter is a disaster waiting to happen.
Even if you live in a region with little snowfall but cold temps (below ~40F) hi-po summer tires can be dangerous if you drive aggressively; the rubber hardens and loses a lot of its grip. Dunlop Winter Sport M3s are a great winter tire as are Pirelli Snowsports and the Blizzaks (LM22, I think?). I've driven my S4 through 5 Rochester winters and it's been great fun.

If I did not track my car so much, there is no way I would want an Evo as a daily driver. In fact I drive my legacy wagon daily. the car is a FANTASTIC track toy, amazing performance car, and I love it. But as a daily driver has no comfort, limited aesthetic appeal, etc....but to each his own.

MTMS4 listed great snow tires ( I have had the Dunlop M3 & Bridgestone's LM 22
I will not be driving the Evo IX this winter. - Instead the A4 Avant.
