All I know is my friend pays $80, for oil and the filter(not labor) for a oil change in his '95 m3. That to me is twice as much it costs me to do one in my suby.

As far as an investment, any car is going to lose it's valve. The bimmer will cost you at least 15K more than the Evo. Even used you are looking at the same price differents. BMW should be worth more money used than an Evo, you paid much more for it.

For me, is the price different worth the extra money and I would have to say no. Bang for your buck, the Evo is the best valve out there today. The reason I would not buy a X is because the all the problems/recalls assiocated with new vehicel lines. I'm not knocking it, it is just a fact. Just my 2 cents.....

I would be buying the M3 new so all routine services etc are covered for 4 years/50k miles (inc. brake pads, rotors etc). This can be extended (at a cost) for another 2 years giving me 6 years/100k worry-free maintenance if I decided to keep the car that long.

Yes, the M3 costs a lot more, but it will be worth a lot more in 4 years (or 6 years time). I reckon the money I will actually lose over 5 years on the M3 or IX will be about the same, so it all evens out over time; it will just cost me more upfront if I buy the M3.

I'm not looking at either car as an investment. I just want to pick the car I'll be most happy living with for the next 5 years.

if I had a choice between an Evo or an M3. Well....cmon. BMW all the way.

Sure the Evo's AWD and has a Turbo.

But RWD and an aftermarket Turbo'll do nice as well. But saying you'd rather have a Mitsubishi over a BMW is silly.

Think resale

I'd rather have an Evo over an M3, hence the reason my IX MR is on its way to me and I'm not down at the BMW dealership today getting bent over and raped. BMW's are WAY WAY overpriced. Its not like you have Hans in the factory handbuilding them or something, they are built just like every other mass produced car these days. Its not like they have some sort of crazy technology that no other car has either, its just a good platform with a good engine like many other cars can claim (including the Evo). Basically you are paying an outrageous price for a nice interior and upgraded stereo, but less performance stock. To each his own I guess.

No, I'm saying I'd rather have an Evo then an E46 M3. It's not a matter of $$$$ either. Wouldn't mind having an M3 - then it would be a matter of $$$ & having 3 cars

I may be a little silly in my thinking, but I buy a car simply because of the desire, not the resale.

Not sure if I would ever consider strapping a turbo on an E46 M3

I just sold my 2001 M Coupe w/ S54 engine to buy an Evo MR. To me my goal is to own some of the 'must have' cars of their time. The Evo is next on that list. To me its not always refinement or what the neighbours think, money is not really the issue.
After the Evo I will pick up the E92 M3. And after that hopefully a 911 Turbo.

So, its not 'silly' IMO to want an Evo in place of a BMW.....I just did and it was a well thought out decision.

i am going to get my IX before winter and drive it in the winter, i tell you what i was real close to buying a m3 but lucally the dealership saw me and wanted nothing to do with me (i was on my way home from work, rebuilding transmissions, diffs, misc driveline, so you can imagine how i looked) i had a lot of cash on me so it wasent that they just treated me differently because i worked for my money, but its better now i have a new evo inbound awd is much better in the snow than rwd and i do have a question winter is bad for the evo because? blissacks included

Still suggest snow tires on some crappy wheels, the Evo loves the snow when setup right. Just make sure they clear the calipers.

Running the Advans in winter is a disaster waiting to happen.

Even if you live in a region with little snowfall but cold temps (below ~40F) hi-po summer tires can be dangerous if you drive aggressively; the rubber hardens and loses a lot of its grip. Dunlop Winter Sport M3s are a great winter tire as are Pirelli Snowsports and the Blizzaks (LM22, I think?). I've driven my S4 through 5 Rochester winters and it's been great fun.

Exactly. In my mind the M3 is also a classic of its time and a must-have (for me at least). I would never own any of the bread-and-butter BMWs because I truly believe they are over-priced; the M cars are ina totally different league.

If I did not track my car so much, there is no way I would want an Evo as a daily driver. In fact I drive my legacy wagon daily. the car is a FANTASTIC track toy, amazing performance car, and I love it. But as a daily driver has no comfort, limited aesthetic appeal, etc....but to each his own.

The Evo is bad in the winter because of the lack of research and care regarding winter conditions; SALT! It will turn most of the allow inside the hood a dusty salt-like color

MTMS4 listed great snow tires ( I have had the Dunlop M3 & Bridgestone's LM 22 ) and you will find driving the Evo with those is a BLAST!

I will not be driving the Evo IX this winter. - Instead the A4 Avant.

Both have its unique character.
Since buying the MR 1 yr ago, I've only driven about 5K miles on the M3.

I guess that goes to show which car I enjoy more at this time........
