Question on Evo 5 sp mt
Question on Evo 5 sp mt
Hello,
Been doing some research for awhile and came close to pulling the trigger on an 06 MR last year. I have decided to hold off and pick up the X next year when it is available. Still having some battles with myself about what transmission to get. Ideally I would like a 6 speed manual but it sounds like that will not be an option at least initially. My concern about the 5 speed is the lack of that 6th gear for freeway driving. Was hoping those with 5 speed IXs would comment on highway driving characteristics. At speeds of 70-75 on highway what are typical rpms? Also how much cabin noise at these speeds? Don't get me wrong, I like a car with a strong engine sound just not sure how it would be on a 4 hour drive going 80 mph. Posting this in the future section rather than current evo so if misplaced, please move. Thanks in advance,
Chris

A hair above 3k rpm. I'm in a RS without any sound deadening. Road noise is NOT an issue for me. I don't think it's loud at all. Also, I drive with my driver's window down a crack over half the time, even on the freeway. Really, I don't miss having a 6th gear. The Evo is strongest from gears 1-4 anyways. At the top of 4th, you're over 100 mph. I once did a road trip from OKC to Portland, OR, in the Evo, and I absolutely loved it. Never did I complain of no 6th gear, nor the road noise being too bad or the desire to have cruise control.

My wife has a 5-speed IX. I have an 06 Impreza base 5-speed. When driving the Subaru, my wife will often forget to shift out of 4th gear because to her, the car is already too quiet so she forgets 5th.
I am already shopping for a new car because the Impreza is to loud for me!
I think the above poster with the RS probably hasn't driven anything else in some time otherwise he'd realize how noisy his car is.
In 06, the difference at highway speeds between the 5 and 6 speeds is just 2-300 rpm so not a big deal.
I'm hoping I can get a quiet X with a DSG, but judging by the IX, that's almost certainly wishful thinking on my part.

I'd make my wife drive the Subaru and I would take the evo Trending Topics
Back to the topic...
I've actually always been a little uncomfortable with the noise when driving on the highway.. Between 75-80 its a noticeable amount of rpms above 3k and I think when I hit 90 its at around 4k rpms... But what can ya do? I dont think the MR's 6speed makes that much of a difference around there? I;m probably wrong lol

Man, these threads get off topic pretty quick around here. Thanks for the replies regarding 5 vs 6 speed. I'll have to take a 5 speed out on the highway once they come out and see what it is like.
