Thoughts on the EVO X styling?
I've been trying to figure out why the EVO and even the DSM community has had such a luke warm attitude about the styling of the new EVO. This luke warm attitude has not been shared by many other car communities and by automotive journalist in particular who think the EVO X styling wise is a definite upgrade from the previous generation EVOs. My thoughts on this is that one of the reason for this luke warm attitude is that EVO owners (and this is the case for many car communities) are not accustomed to such dramatic change in such a short period of time. It took nine generations for the EVO I (pictured below) to go from this-
First generation
To this (EVO IX)-
Ninth generation
But took only one generation for the EVO IX to go from the picture above, to the picture below (EVO X).

I can understand why it could take some getting use to when people have been so accustomed to a certain design and all of a sudden there is a dramatic change. But people these things happend. While I've always enjoyed the look of the EVOs from the first generation to the ninth generation, the same cannot be said by many people I know. Do they think my car looks OK, yeah, but when I tell them it is a $30,000 car they almost sh*t themselves, of course they do not realize that the EVO has always been about performance and not looks. When I look at the EVO X I finally see a car that looks much more like its price tag. I know people complain about how it looks like an Audi, or a Mazda 6, or a TSX, Skyline GTR, or even a RSX sometimes, and you know what maybe it does, but all those cars have something in common, success. I cannot blame Mitsubishi designers for taking a look at some of those cars as a basis for their future model EVO. To me the EVO X looks much more sportier and even more aggressive, while the EVO IX to me has always looked like a commuter sedan on steriods. The EVO X could have been different, could have been subtle improvements over the last generation EVO and I know a lot of us would have been happier, but there comes a time when the EVO must evolve.
Now I believe another reason for this luke warm attitude has to be blamed on Mitsubishi. For some reason the EVO community and automotive journalist have a vastily different outlook on the styling of the EVO X. A major reason for this has to be that many automotive journalist have actually seen the car in person, while many of us have not. Most of us haven't even seen the Prototype. With a new such controversial design, I believe it would have been very important for Mitsubishi to show off the new design at more car shows allowing us to see the car in person, but where does the Prototype go, the Detroit Auto Show, which is heavy on automotive journalist, but increasingly low on attendance. Thus automotive journalist have seen the car and think it looks great and what most of us see is unflattering internet pictures and spy photos of the EVO X in unflattering colors and settings. I honestly believe in person the EVO X is much more stunning to look at than what we see in photos. A perfect example is the 08 Lancer GTS, which I must admit is a very good looking car, photos in no way do it justice. If Mitsubishi is to fire anybody, it is not their designers, but they need to get rid of their photographers. Hopefully the EVO X will finally start to make it rounds on the US Autoshow market. I believe the EVO X will be a huge success, and is much needed in a market that is becoming increasingly more and more competitive.
Just my thoughts, hey we are all entitled to our opinions

X looks great now... wait till people start throwing rims and lowering it.. SEX =)
I honestly think that red color we have been seeing is ugly..... It does the X no justice, they need to keep it that rally red or something...
Anyways i also believe the X will be a success and i predict we will see a bunch of people trading up for one

i LOVE the way the X looks....i think most Evo owners are lukewarm because
1) they already have an Evo so they kind of take it for granted
2) bitter that the next gen Evo looks better than they one they drive
2.5) they're not financially capable of trading up for the X if the X really is that much better
3) just jumping on the bandwagon of hate on the Evo boards
pretty much all car forums i frequent (ranging from Euro to domestics), majority of the people like the way the X looks. i can't wait to see one with big FMIC and widebody.
the design of the car is awesome in my book, now it's the powerplant that keeps me up at night sometimes (well not really, but you know)...part of me wish Mitsu could have stuck with a 4g63 with variable timing on intake and exhaust side, or just go with a bigger engine than 2000cc

the look of the evo x has grown on me and now i love it as well.
this car is going to look GREAT in person.
Black Evo X, gold or red mitsu emblem, evolution x decal on the back , lowered, lip, etc.
i even like the rear now, 6 months is WAY too damn long of a wait. I just want to know how long it will take for the performance parts to become available.

I'll be getting the RS model to save some cash so I can put more money into the motor and suspension. With the only colors available being red and white and my last two vehicles were both red it looks like I'll be on the hunt for a wicked white RS in spring!!! I think the new X looks great stock, but give it a year or two for all the aftermarket stuff to come out. I think it will be one sharp looking car!
I'm focused more on function over fashion, but the first thing going on my X will be a set of 18" anthracite SSR Type-C RS wheels. That should really set the car off right. I really hope the new car has wide enough fenders to allow 9.5"-10" wide wheels like the current model.

thanks
Although I don't care for the styling..... I am more afraid of what will come out of the dodge/Mitsu teamwork. I have NEVER been a big fan of DC anything.
For some reason I fell in love with the 8 and 9 first time I saw them but the 10 hasn't.
I'm sure once people start pimping them out they will be more popular but the first year the price of the car and untested mods will be EXPENSIVE.

X looks like crap
... reason I hate it so much is that it looks like a srt-4 mated with a mazda 6. It looks childish and not really a mature car. Yea Yea either does the 8 or the 9 but remove the wing and you fit right in with the rest of the family sedans
.
The other reason I dislike it is that they got rid of the 4G63 platform... mebe the new engine will perform better i dont know nor do i care. Without the 4G63 it just doesnt feel like an EVO to me. They should of just named it another car and kept producing the 9.
But I guess we will all have to wait and see till it is actually out and the aftermarket scene catches on with it... Mebe I too will come to love it
