With shorter gearing however you have more mechanical advantage from the gearing. You can get away with slightly more lag with lower gearing, because you have more RPM's per MPH because of the lower gearing. It is air flow and heat that spool up the turbo, air flow in high reving engines is proportional to RPM up to a certain RPM (HP peak). So with lower gearing you will have a higher RPM at the same MPH, this will help out the slightly more laggy turbo. The lower torque at a lower rpm due to lag would be masked by the increased torque due to the lower gearing (i.e. more torque). Just my opinion on the matter.
