i got a new laptop and the serial connector on the back of it is a female and the utec connector cable is female....

my old laptop was a male serial connector ....what do i need to make this work

How many pins on that "serial" port? Sounds like you've found the video port.

 

Seems like the port you are looking at is your external display port.. Not a serial port, serial ports are ALWAYS male on a laptop.. Since its a new laptop, its more than likely you only have USB ports, if thats the case you'll have to pick up a good quality USB-Serial adapter (Keyspan is the best)
