Utec + turbo kit ?

I have been looking at turbo kits and maybe even putting my own kit together this winter. So what I was wondering is what happens to the stock sensor that reads the air in the factory inlet pipe. Most of the turbo kits use a big 4" inlet (i believe) with a cone filter to feed the new turbo.

Just wondering how this would work. And what are the options since I am currently using and want to continue using the Utec for e/m.

Thanks alot- Wayne

Well, you can use a coupler for the MAF that fits the 3" (actually its slightly larger than 3") to 4" but most also don't have a provision for recirculation..

or you can go the direction I went, and that is I replaced my MAF with an aftermarket blowthrough setup, which eliminates the MAF before the turbo and therefore doesn't have problems with a BOV or large 4" intakes.. the MAF sensor I have is actually integrated into a buschur upper intercooler pipe.

I say don't let the fact that you have to run a MAF stop your plans for a turbo kit.. since you can run a blowthrough setup, or if your patient, you can wait for TurboXS to release a firmware version with Speed Density (don't know how far off that is)

In all honesty though, almost everyone I have spoken to who has gotten a big turbo upgrade has eventually regretted doing it. Make sure you really do understand what it is your getting into when you consider a upgrade like that. Plus engineering your own kit, means that you have even more unknowns... just keep that in mind.

The good news is that the UTEC can be convinced to work with any engine combo you want..

Thaks for the info MJ. It is discouraging that most people aren't happy with their turbo kits. Maybe they choose on that is just too large ehh. I was thinking of a turbo similiar to the 3076. But the more I talk to a shop in the Lone Star State, a bolt on solution from them seems like it will fulfill my needs when it is released shortly.

Is there a point though when a larger turbo will outflow the stock MAF?

Yes, but the turbo has to move alot of air very quickly for it to be troublesome.. as long as the rate isn't so fast that it causes turbulence that prevents the MAF from correctly counting, it should read as high as 2500hz or more..
