Utec + H2O Injection

Well I finally got it installed today. I put in the "almost-do-it-yourself", reasonably priced, Coolingmist 100psi single stage kit with filter, water pressure/cloged injector indicator and low fluid warning indicator.
I'm running straight distilled water, (better cooling than alcohol).
I set up a base map with 110octane race gas at 12.2:1 AFR.
I've only done a few datalogs. I've got a pretty consistent AFR, boost around 19.5 to redline, (which I figured out with the gain, thanks guys), and I've got the timing at 22 degs. Not even a hint of knock.
I'm going to continue to slowly crank boost and advance timing until I sense knock, (which I have set the sensitivity even higher since blowing up), then I'll back off.
I'm sure it will be a few days before I get the perfect tune. I'll let you know.
...By the way...I LOVE THIS UTEC!!!

very cool. may i ask were you set your new knock settings? and have you tuned for 91-93 octane with the WI? i still havn't gotten my WI kit, but im wondering if you tune for 11.1-11.3 or higher with the WI?

I'll have to look tomorrow what my knock settings are, but I bumped them up a few points from default.
I tuned for race gas for the water injection, ...kinda.
It's not a complete equal, but I just wanted to get the AFR correct, becasue once you start injecting water, it throws off your WBO2 readings, (reads richer).
So, I started with the 12.2:1 afr and leaned slightly from there. Now I'm adding boost and timing, ...slowly.

thats cool. i was just asking because i would of thought you would be running non-race gas with the WI. and since i tune for 11.2 with street gas, when i get the WI will i still shoot for 11.2 with 91 or will i now tune for 12.2 as if i was running race gas?

Yes, that's the idea. With WI, tune as if you were running race gas.
Race gas = high octane, which means slower combustion, less chance for detonation.
Water Injection = cooler cylinder temps, slower combustion, less chance for detonation.

The guys running alcohol get some cooling, (not as much as water), but they get the added octane from the alcohol. The negatives are, alcohol cost more than water and you also need a system that can handle the corrosive nature of alcohol.
It takes twice as much alcohol as water for the same cooling.

When you run afr's in the 11:1 range, you are using the extra fuel to cool the cylinders down to help with detonation.
Water has a much higher capacity to carry away the unwanted heat than fuel does. So, lean out your mixture.
Also, if you don't lean out your mixture you will drown out the combustion process.
In theory, WI has most of the same benefits of running higher octane. It also has some other benny's, like "steam cleaning" your combution chambers. This cuts down on carbon build-up which will eventually lead to increased chance of detonation from the carbon.

bishiboy, it's cool to finally see more Evo owners using water injection. I've been using an Aquamist system on a previous car for a couple of years. Hopefully if this damn rain stops in L.A. I get will get to finish my 2D system on my Evo. I definitely will be starting out with pure distilled water on my car. What size nozzle are you using on your set up?

I'm using 3.9 gal/hr nozzle.
Ya, it's raining here too.
