CEL with UTEC, always after second start.
CEL with UTEC, always after second start.
I just installed a UTEC in a '05 EVO, the car runs fine without the UTEC, no CEL or nothing. But after I installed the UTEC I tried diferrent maps and got a CEL. I decided to leave it at MAP 0 until I go to my local tuner who knows a lot about the UTECS. But I noticed that everytime I disconnect the battery to reset the CEL, the car runs great for hours if I dont shut it down, but after I shutdown the car it always starts with a CEL and never goes out. I have tried this like 10 times and always no CEL until the second time I start the car. The car also runs fine even with the CEL light on.
Any Idea what could be causing this? I havent check the CEL code so I dont know what code I am getting, just wanted to see if anyone had same problem. Remember, I only use MAP "0". I also tried the UTEC software 1.3, same thing, went back to 1.7 and all parameters in default and same thing, only after second start! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

Without the code its impossible to even speculate.. Since the car is an 05, there may be differences that many of us aren't actually aware of too..
Also, there's nothing wrong with calling TurboXS and asking them what they think the issue is. But you will have to pull that code first.

Ok, I am the owner of the car Onpol is reffering. After I posted this message I removed the UTEC, the CEL went off and I have been running the car without the UTEC for one week, no CEL, no nothing. Finally I received the scanner yesterday and installed the UTEC again, of course I got the CEL again after second start. The code I am getting is this one:
P0243 Turbo/Super Charger Wastegate Solenoid “A”
I think that refers to the wastegate solenoid that you remove when you install the MBC, I have a Hallman, but I didnt removed the solenoid, Its just hanging there with the plug connected because if I disconnect it, the CEL comes on, of course. Any idea why this is not a problem with the stock ECU and the UTEC is giving me a CEL? I spoke with my tuner and everything is correctly installed, he just doesnt know why this is happening. Any ideas? Thanks...

I do get this CEL on occasion on very cold days.. I'm inclined to think its due to a boost spike causing airflow to ramp quickly, and then the ECU tries to close the boost solenoid to drop boost, but the UTEC is controlling it, telling the ECU its doing what it is, only the airflow isn't reducing (boost isn't dropping) so it thinks there's something wrong with the actuator or solenoid.. But this is only speculation..
Here's a suggestion to try.. Make a map that has the boost control set completely to ECU so its passing everything from the ECU through.. Use MAP1.. Put your tuned maps in 2 etc.. See if that possibly makes a difference.
Another possibility is to get a map sensor and use closed loop boost so it never can spike.

Ill try it, but remember that I am only using MAP 0, and everything should be already on control fo the stock ECU.
Also, when I installed the UTEC yesterday I only turned on my car for a minute didnt raced or touched the gas pedal and just turned it off and on again, and still got the CEL after second start, so I dont know about the spike! But Ill try it.

If your getting the error for absolutely no reason (Wastegate error) then there's possibly something wrong with the UTEC.. the reason why I suggested putting all ECU for boost control into map 1, is because I've been told that the UTEC uses the MAP1 boost map in passthrough... Its worth a try...
However if you are definitely getting that error, then its either a bad solenoid or something wrong with the UTEC.. the UTEC recreates the correct load for the solenoid that the ECU expects to see, thats why I am guessing it may be the UTEC itself.
Its also possible the 05 does have some minor differences that aren't immediately obvious.. (duty cycle control of the solenoid, etc.. even wired differently or the solenoid has shows a different load)
Have you called TurboXS and talked to them yet? This discussion is a little pointless until you can at least talk to someone there about your concerns. You can at least arrange to send it back to them to be tested.
