SAFC2 tuning question

Hi all, I've had my SAFC2 installed.

The raw reading of the knock sensor is ~80 at idle, ~120 at 3500rpm and I've since calibrated it.

Armed with a APEXi Turbo Timer, Knock Sensor and my butt, i proceed with my butt tuning.

My NE points are:
800rpm, 1200rpm, 1600rpm, 2000rpm, 2600rpm, 3000rpm, 3600rpm, 4000rpm, 4600rpm, 5000rpm, 5600rpm, 6000rpm

Lo Th: 30%
Hi Th: 50%

First, I proceed with -10% at 800rpm, Lo Th and get about 5 to 10knocks and I adjusted it back to -8%.

Secondly, I proceed tuning the 1200rpm to 3000rpm Lo Th range.
Surprisingly, by adjusting to even -13% throttle, I am not getting a lot of knocks !
The max I get is ~70+ knocks if I use the peak reading.

The above varies a lot from the rest of the data I read, which hardly tune anything lower than 3000rpm.

Is the ECU compensating and overwriting my SAFC2 data reading, thus I am not getting any significant knocks in closed loop ?

However, I do find the car a bit perkier now for city-type stop-and-go traffic condition.

Any valuable advise ?

Invest in some type of logger. The knock readings off a S-AFCII are not accurate.

Since you have the Apex TT you can do an old school tune off of the O2 voltages, but it is what it is... scroll down to Initial AFC Tuning (Low);

Dude a v minimum you need to be able to log timimng and O2 voltage. I would never tune my car that way though. I would recommend a minimum of WB O2 and a way to log timing. Bad things can go wrong real fast, bad things go wrong even faster if you have no way of monitoring.

These guys are correct^^^ATLEAST a fucntional wideband...the ecu will pull timing long before the motor will blow while using an AFC...unless you are being ungodly stupid with the settings....Get a wideband and tune it for about 11.5 and below on pump gas. The more boost you run, the less timing the ecu will give you...and vice versa. Good luck.

Arrow safc

FYI,knock reading on the SAFC is not very accurate.Go to a DYNO and tune with a WB.Good luck man!

You should be ok with minus 8% although I would not push it any further with out a wb

i don't have an evo, but i have a turboed oz (no flames please lol) i have been reading up on tuning with my safc. I have a air/fuel guage, but it doesn't have the digital numeric numbers that i have seen on widebands... is this just a not as cool wideband, like do i need to have the numbers to properly tune or can i just go by the meter of rich and lean??

No to tune properly you're going to need wideband. Narrowband o2 will not give you anywhere near enough of an accurate reading. Wideband isn't just a pretty gauge... Narrowband will give you Rich/Stoich/Lean and that's it for readings. Wideband will give you a much broder reading and much more accurate. A MUST for tuning without a dyno.

icic well I guess that I am just going to have to maybe go out and eventually get a wideband if I am going to get my car tuned up totally. off the top of your head, do you know if the ECUflash program does the wideband readings? if it does than I might just get that cable!
