Safe way to lean out w/ AFC?

My car has been running much too rich for far too long now, and I'm not entirely sure about my options at this point.
My 05' Evo 8 has a dynoflash reflashed ECU, bosch injectors, walbro 255lph fuel pump and S-AFC II to lean out the flash a little bit. I also have an exhaust temp. gauge which I know can be used to help tun AFR's but I dont really know how.

So I guess my question is, what would be the most cost effective way to help lean out my AFR's, without taking any risk of going too lean. I could round up an air/fuel ratio gauge somewhere if I looked, but would this been enough without a wide band o2? Should I just take it to a dyno shop for a tune? Is there a way to use the exhaust temp gauge to work AFR's out?

Any advice would be much appriciated, thanks guys!

(BTW, I live in the seattle area if anyone wants to suggest a good dyno shop)

+1

with out a wideband the only other option u have is going to a dyno. most widebands are not that expensive. It will pay for its self over and over again, and it also takes that headache away..."am i too lean??"

exhaust temp is a nice gauge to have for saftey but i wouldnt tune off it. Your going to see a lean number on a wideband before you see dangerously high temps on the gauge. The differance could be letting out before you do damage.

It also keeps ur wideband in check...for some reason if ur sensor goes up and your seeing a good A/F but the temps in the red you know something isent right.

Wow amazing another dynoflash owner that was flashed way to rich. Get a wideband and see just how rich you are. I got a wideband and figured out that half to 3/4 throttle it was pegged at 10.0 on my guage. if the gauge would just read the word "RICH" that is what it would say. Dynoflash sucks and his customer service is horrible too so just a heads up i wouldnt try to contact him about it.

Emm really? same for me. seriuosly i thought i gave him ethe wrong injector size. im about to pull them out and have them flow tested and get it reflashed (if the size was wrong).

car runs good though, just had to pull a good amount of fuel from 4k-redline to get the car in to the mid 11's (A/F)

Huh??? Since when do people worry about their AFRs at half throttle? That doesn't make much sense. You're supposed to check AFRs at full throttle.

That still doesn't mask the fact that 10 AFR at 3/4 throttle is rich as hell.

I have a flash from Jestr tuning, and my car still runs on the rich side judging by all the black soot on my exhaust. I don't think you can expect too much from a "mail order" flash because the one doing the tuning doesn't have any concrete data feedback for the changes that are made. I'd rather be on the rich side, than too lean...fouled spark plugs and a slightly clogged cat is cheaper to fix than a blown engine.

Completely true statement there. But as we all know the evo runs really rich from the factory anyhow so there cant be much improvement at all or even getting your "claimed" 20whp that al claims. Yes maybe some of his flashes are good but mine was ****. I contacted him about how i was not happy with the flash. He responded to i believe it was maybe two of my pms. He told me to look for a boost leak. WTF. The car never ran any better with the flash i got from him. After 3 pms i believe it was asking him if i could get a refund i just simply dropped it. I then asked for him to flash my car back to stock what did i get NO ANSWER hell at that point i was so sick of him NOT answering his pms i wasnt worried about getting my money back. All i wanted was my car flashed back to stock and NO REFUND. But then again apparently im not the only one that he doesnt respond too. Again i must say his customer service is ****.
