New to tuning, what to look for?

I'm looking to start tuning my '03 Evo, but I'm not sure exactly what I need to look for. I've got a Zeitronix data logger, so I can see my EGTs, boost, and AFRs.

I've got the simple bolt ons, 3" exhaust with HFC, Walbro pump and 660cc injectors, and an MBC. I'm going to be using ECU flash to make adjustments.

I'd like to run a little more boost than stock (maybe 22-23) on 91 pump gas. I'd consider running more with 100 octane for the track.

So I guess my question is, what should I be looking for when I tune in terms of my safe EGTs, and ideal AFRs?

While i may be a beggining tuner myself just a suggestion i would get Evoscan its a great program and rather user friendly new version even calcs power curves. One other main benefit is that you will be able to log knock which as you probably already know is important and BTW your Zeitronix will work with Evoscan so they are completely compatible

Let knock and AFR be your guide

Knock < 3 counts
AFR ~ 11.0 on pump gas to be on the safe side
Timing - as much as you can run without knock.

this is a crude formula but it should give you an idea and I have a link in my signature that takes you to a post that has links to the hardware/software you'll need and even has a short video tutorial on how to use it.

Thanks

BerserkerX, EvoScan looks pretty cool, I'll definitely check it out.

Out of curiosity, do you know how they can calculate the power and torque curves? I couldn't see anything on their webpage that shows how they did it.

Any experience comparing those numbers with an actual dyno for accuracy?

Thanks

Mellon,

Thanks for the numbers, that helps give me a baseline.

Should I be worried at all about EGTs? I've been told that I should stay between 900-950C. Any input?

EGT you should really worry about if you're running TONs of timing ...methanol or some other power adder that tricks the a/f ...if the egt's start climbing passed your base threshold...you have to either A: back out timing B: add fuel to cool cylinders...
Like mellon said, watch the AF ...for 91 oct...11.0's across the board is good. 0 knock should be your goal. Set your boost first, pull a log...and tweak from there... Oh! Last thing, you add timing, your A/F will get leaner...have fun, but not too much
