Boost Level Check

Just wanted to make sure I am where I should be on boost at this point, or do I have some room to play?. I am running 22psi mods below.

Thx

your fine. You've got the TBE. Plus, the only real supprting mod is the Walbro, and the IX's have an uprgraded fuel pump anyways.

IX's have an upgraded fuel pump? If boost was adjusted and using only reccomended gas, what's the highest boost you could safely take it stock. Do you need to adjust timing etc?

The IX fuel pump is different from the VIII's to my best knowledge. Not saying a Walbro wont help but it is not completely necessary if you've got a TBE and are running low 20's.

I personally wouldn't run more than 22 with a TBE and filter on my IX. I'm running about 22 right now.

I believe the highest psi you could run on the stock turbo was either 23 or 24.

That’s what I figured; I ended up with the walbro for 2 reasons.

1. I got a great deal on it.

2. I am getting ready to step up the inj to a 880, fuel rail, fuel reg, and cams.

Soon after that ill be into engine mgt. so I wanted to have the fuel curve all there.

I am trying to see how much I can get out of the stock turbo before I upgrade that.

Thanks for the input.

Just don't go any higher than that though or your turbo will kurplode! Although a little race gas will keep you astray from detonation.

I'm running 23 and tapering to about 20 at 7000. I've run as much as 21.5 at 7000 and have not run out of fuel.

But, timing is honestly as important as boost ... play with that instead.

I'm running 22psi, I was told 23 to 24 on a IX, from a couple tunners...but I don't want to run on the edge.

I run pretty much knock free at 23 psi with an 11.5 AFR. This is also with the stock cat, so a full exhaust would make this even safer. 23 is not the edge. 27 maybe ... =)

I've definitely seen guys pushing more than 24 psi on the stock turbo, although the majority seem to be in the 22-24 psi range. As with everything else, the more you push it to the limit, the greater the risk. I would plan on a more conservative tune.

As far as the fuel pumps are concerned, the Evo IX pump has a higher output than the VIII, although I'm not sure the exact figures. Even still, I would recommend a Walbro 255 - for $100 bucks and 30 minutes of your time for the install, its a solid insurance policy.

That's awesome, thanks for the assurance, how do you know you are running knock free? Do you have a knock sensor or you got a tune? I'm interested in knowing about the 22psi set up, is it safe as daily driver? What about fuel consumption etc. Are you guys recommending an upgraded fuel pump for insurance purposes on 22psi? I want to up the boost just a tad bit to improve the hp but not too much to hurt the turbo and engine and fuel consumption.

I tuned it myself. I always monitor knock while tuning. I think 22 psi is plenty safe for a daily driver. I'm running at about 92% IDC at 7000 RPM on my setup, so an upgraded pump would be a good idea for some extra insurance. If you tune the car you'll get better gas mileage while you've got the hammer down because you'll lean out the top end. But, if you crank up the boost a bit you'll overcome that increase in mileage because you have to dump more fuel to match the new airflow.

I wouldn't raise the boost unless you're monitoring knock
