Ticking noise

I was at a vw dealer selling a 06 evo. THe chek engine light is on bc the car has no cats, and i keep hearing a ticking/grinding noise near the timing belt. The timing belt is under the cover. Is the ticking normal?

THe mechanic gave me a reason which was the tensioner needs wd40. I tuned hondas before and tensioners are a big deal. I like the car but dont want to buya problem car like my old vw gti.

Need your help guys. Appreciate it.

you are hearing the 4G63 engine Lifter Tick. Mine does that on start up, once it warms up it goes away. It will be more prevalent if you don't bleed your lifters after a cam install. It's just the sound of the engine trying to talk to you, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I have the same sound comming from my evo.Do you hear a "shing, shing, shing" like sound comming from the timing belt area? Its not the lifters thats a distinct tap that comes from the top of the engine. The tensioner sounds like a very possible problem and I will have to check it out I bought my evo used and it didn't have a timing gear cover and I never put one on cause I thought it looked cool. But as I took the luvered vent off the hood I imagine water or such probably got in there. keep me updated on what you find.

If it is a IX, it could be the MIVEC system. My friend's car is at the dealer now hopefully getting this repaired. They've already replaced pretty much all of the pulleys, the tensioner and the balancer pulley to no avail.

We think it has to do with oil pressure going to the MIVEC system because the noise on his car seems to go away when oil pressure rises (i.e. on warm up and when throttle is applied). When this was mentioned to the dealer they had no idea how the system worked and he's had to wait a week or so for them to either figure out how to fix it or get someone there that knows how to fix it.

If we get any results I'll try to post what was repaired/replaced for the fix.

thanks you guys are quick and helpful. I spoke to the dealer about the used evo and they sprayed wd40 on it. it still makes the noise. the car was traded in and there was obvious work done to it. The check engine light is on bc of no cats. I dont know what else was done to the car by the previous owner and the dealer wont tell me. i dont want to buy a problem car. i rather create the problems myself on a stock evo so i know what i did. What do you guys think? THanks a lot.

i have a similar issue but it sounds more like a bearing in an accessory is about to go. i've brought it in for service before, but by the time i get to the dealer the car is hot and doesn't make the noise. so i have an appointment this week.

I have the same belt noise on my 2006 RS. I have found that if I take alittle tension off the serp. belt with the car at idle the noise goes away, which makes me think some sort of bearing on an accessory, idler, or tensioner. The previous owner had replaced the water pump and the noise went away for a couple of weeks and then would start back intermittenly. That is were I am at right now in my diag. The thing about the Mivec system is interesting, it sound similar to my complant.

It's the lifters

I have an 06 ix mr and have had the same problem (ticking from the valve cover area). Quite annoying!

I had a few thousand miles left on my warranty and thought what the hey. Even though I'm modified, they still repaired my vehicle under warranty. There is a TB for Evo IXs. The TB is to either clean or replace the lifters. They apparently get gummed up after time. I had my car back the following day. They said they only had to clean the lifters to ensure they can freely slide up and down.

The car was nice and quiet for a few months, but the ticking is beginning to ever so slightly return. I'm sure if they would have replaced all of the lifters instead I probably wouldn't be beginning hear the slight ticking noise again. Eventually, I'll bring it back in for new lifters.

My noise is coming from the right side wheel well. I believe its either the water pump or some sort of oil check valve ticking. The noise goes away once the vehicle comes to operating temperature, and the water pump has been replaced before. 31k miles on the car now!

Weird. My ticking noise is comming from the left top of the block. It seems to follow the throttle response......meaning speeds up and down. Would spark plug wear cause this sound too?

I've got a noise coming from the left top of the block. I replaced all of the lifters and the sound remains (didn't quiet down at all). My seems to follow the throttle response as well. I've been doing some reading and I'm thinking it's either piston slap, timing belt tensioner or spark plug jump. Anyone else have this problem and how did they fix it?

i bought my IX SE used and it has the same noise on cold starts as well..but goes away once it reaches operating temp. i had the dealer change the belts and pulleys (for no cost..woohoo warranty) ...its not as loud as it was before but its still there...could be the MIVEC and something to do with the lifters as ive been seeing earlier in this thread? i thought i was the only one with this problem...guess not
