No MAF = No knock?

Now, pardon for me being slightly new at this. But here's what I've noticed so far.
I always get some intermittant knock. Maybe going up a hill at part throttle or heavy part throttle in a higher gear. Enough my CEL light will flash. (set at 4 cts) Its not common or consistent. Just occassionally I will see some knock. Not typically under wot. Maybe on a bad throttle on / off / on like sneaking thru traffic. I get it sometimes.

Again, I always tune for minimal, to ZERO knock. So its not often I see it. BUT.
I have not seen my CEL flash a single time since I've switched over to SD.

And this makes me wonder... because during the initial setup. I missed the VE table. I had it set on #1. And not #2. So the car would go rediculously lean at WOT and full boost. I of course added fuel with pro to try to iron some things out. But either way - there were pulls made at 24psi at almost 13.5-1 with NO CEL flashing. I of course let up quickly... but its like the A/F didn't drop at all.

I am on 93 octane. No meth, no trickery, 8-14* of advance across the higher load portions. (Or higher if Pro is putting me on a lower load column) Car doesn't even hesitate. The head is not in my lap... as I would have expected...

Discuss.

I have since corrected a few of my setup mistakes as well as increased the amount of MAP enrichment so that the A/F follows the boost curve correctly. Part throttle was still a problem holding it in the 13's at say 1 bar. Now it is in the mid to lower 12's. And 11.80's 12.0 at WOT.

Again. No knock. EVER. When I tried to run it this lean before it WAS knocking its @ss off. But I have since pulled atleast 4* of timing. (to rid knock) Is this a miracle... or should I go check my knock sensor connector?

According to my car now. 13-1 A/F is ok @ 24psi on 93 octane. I don't see that being possible.

My fueling is still a bit erratic as I have yet to really grasp all of the abilities of Pro. But nowhere near as bouncy as the stock MAF. Its also the same between gears. Period. No more super rich 5th gear. Or super lean 1st. And perfect 3rd.

Now I need to log this but, still, my knock lite hasn't failed yet. And the CEL definately works. I got a baro code when I flipped the key on w/o the MAF plugged in when I was first putting it all on. So I know that works.

I haven't had a chance to really log. I've been busy. So its been the button mashing kind of tuning on errands that get me away from this god forsaken computer.

So far so good. Just the lack of knock has me confused.

12-13AFR is doable but certainely not safe. Do a couple of back to back runs with that lean mixture and the data will probably change to something not so nice.

If you are hitting 12-13 AFR on a tune that had you much richer with the MAF than you are hitting lower load cells and therefore the knock calcs may be slightly off. This may have a significant effect on the accuracy of the stock ECU's knock filtering.

THIS is what I wasn't thinking of.

Very good point.
And also why I posted this.

CEL/knock is 120 load req.

I was in the 260-280+ range before. Even with Pro in AFC mode and A/F tracking.
Could I have really dropped that low in the load spectrum?

Scary.

It would explain the rediculous amount of lean I'm seeing. I think this warrants a break to go log.

For the record I have have absolutely ZERO intention of testing my luck trying to run the car this way AT ALL. Just surprised me. But what you said makes an awful lot of sense. So now I will go look to be sure, and report back if anyones interested.

It did shift the load down. Quite a bit actually, but in part I think its because I'm down about 4psi. JDM MAP is reading 20psi now instead of 24.

I am now at 190-220 load. And it seems like part throttle spooling is down at 80-100. I am not really knocking more than 1 or 2 counts up top. Or at WOT.

I reflashed the car richer to put it into the mid 11's. Added more enrichment to the MAP settings and backed off the TPS enrichment a hair, and just focused on cleaning up the tune. I pulled a bit more timing where it appears to be a problem in the lower load range. I assume this is mainly because things have shifted down a bit. Most of my knock is in the 80-100 range. And I've managed to clear most of it.

I expected worse.

Guess its time for a boost leak test and then keep tuning.

I spent some time dialing in the pro. Moving things around in ecuflash. And hunting down any leaks.

After that. All is well. Knock is under control, A/F's are where they should be and the car runs great! Turned up the boost and the car hauls!
