Question Temporary wideband O2 sensor installation for tuning

Where do professional tuners put the wideband O2 sensor on a car that doesn't have a sensor already on the downpipe? Do they put the sensor in the exhaust pipe and compensate for the cat?

I have no need to drive around with a wideband O2 sensor and AFR gauge all the time - I only need it when tuning. I'd really like to avoid welding a bung to my downpipe since installing and removing the sensor will be a pain when tuning.

[note: posting in Evo 1-9 forums since this is a generic question and this forum has a larger audience than the X forum]

The only other way is to use your Wideband 02 sensor with a clamp like this one..

However if you have a Catalytic Converter your A/F reading will not be correct, which is why so many people weld a 02 sensor bung on their down pipe. Allot of bungs come with screw in caps so you don't always have to have the 02 sensor installed.

On my buddies VIII we used the rear o2 sensor bung and ran the cable in the window. He runs a testpipe so this a pretty accurate way to do it and you do not even have to jack your car up.

when i got tuned, they just put the sensor on the tip of my catless exhaust. I didn't have my UEGO at the time.

now i'm pretty much 95% sure it was open loop, my car was tuned on crome and you have the option to disable the o2 sensor which puts it in open loop, and i'm pretty positive thats what he did, someone correct me if i'm wrong, i'm pretty sure you would take your upstream one out if you have a cat still

Dude, just have a bung welded on and put in a plug when not using it. Takes 30 seconds to unscrew the bung and screw in the WB when tuning.

Be sure to use anti sieze.

What? He's asking where professional tuners TEMPORARY place the sensor for tuning. Not everyone who is going to get a tune will go to an exhaust shop and have them remove the exhaust then weld a bung.

I never use the tailpipe and clamp when tuning..I use either a bung in the front or post cat 02 bung..I try to place as far upstream as possible to combat delay in readings..

Yes, if you dont have you exhaust ready for a wideband, then you can use the rear o2 for a temporary tune
