Talking EvoScan 1.3R Cable Not Recognized by EvoScan 2.8

I just took delivery of an EvoScan 1.3R USB Datalogging and Reflashing Cable plus EvoScan V2.8.005. I want to use the cable to log and reflash my Evo8 ECU. I plugged the cable in to a USB port on my laptop which is running Windows 7-32 bit, connected the other ends to black OBDII port and white Diag port, fired up EvoScan with the default settings, and turned on the ignition. EvoScan cannot communicate with the ECU. I see "Error: OpenPort 1.3U USB Cable Not Responding, perhaps select OpenPort 2.0 if you have that." in the event log. I tried changing the settings to OpenPort 2.0 but got "Error: OpenPort2 USB Cable Not Responding. Unplug your USB cable from the PC and replug this in and retry."

After unplugging and reconnecting it seems the cable is not recognized by the EvoScan software. I also have ECUFlash 1.43.3252 installed on the laptop. I don't hear a PnP sound when plugging the cable in. I cannot see a virtual com port in Win7 Device Manger under Ports. I cannot see a device for the cable under USB controllers. I've tried reinstalling the drivers - no success. I've tried uninstalling ECUFlash, uninstalling EvoScan, cleaning the registry, reinstalling just EvoScan 2.8 - no success.
I've tried removing all drivers that have anything to do with USB/serial emulation; for example, I had ProScan installed with an Elm327 serial to USB converter - all gone but still no success.
I guess the 1.3R cable could be bad, but I'm told EvoScan tests all of them with EvoScan on an Evo8.
The software V2.8.005 could perhaps be installed incorrectly but I'm just running setup.exe from the V2.8.005 zip file I downloaded and entering the serial number from EvoScan.
What additional troubleshooting can I use to pinpoint the cause?

Uninstall Evoscan
Uninstall Ecuflash.
Reboot.
Re-install Ecuflash 1.42
Re-install Evoscan.
Reboot.
Plug-in 1.3 cable.

Hope that helps.

90% of people are using Windows 7 and Evoscan 1.3D / 1.3R / 1.3U and it works fine. I have not found a computer yet that EvoScan v2.8.0005 doesn't work on.

ecktt, you don't need any reboots with windowsXP/windows7.

Exclamation

I eventually tracked Hamish at Evoscan down He was kind enough to run a remote troubleshooting session over the internet and found the cable was bad. He told me it was the first one in thousands and said he'd ship me a replacement which I'm still waiting for.

Hey hamish - how long does it take to ship a replacement? I've been waiting patiently for two weeks.

Hi Carl, did you send the other one back? I also haven't received it. I'm sending your replacement cable today - sorry, thought I had sent it, my bad. Yeah your cable wouldn't even appear in device manager, It is because of a break in the black 4wire USB cable wire itself, probably works when the cable is positioned on a specific angle, which most likely was fine when I tested it on the Evo8 vehicle before sending it. The last thing you want is an intermittent USB wire, replacement on its way. Cheers, Hamish.

Unhappy

Thanks for responding Hamish. I didn't know you wanted the bad one returned and I'm afraid I tossed it out because I was so frustrated with it - sorry
My original Evoscan order number was 3680 placed on Monday July 18.

I have the same problem.

Two times my Tactrix 1.3U works and now I couldn't connect it with ECU, error:

"OpenPort 1.3U USB Cable Not Responding, perhaps select OpenPort 2.0 if you have that"

What is wrong? Windows 7 32bit. How I could check if the cable is ok?
