Downloading a tune file?

First, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I've been lurking evom for a long time but this is my first post.

I bought a built 03 evo 8 this year and it needs a better tune. After searching around my area for the most trust worthy evo tuner I found someone that seems legit. While talking to him, he said I would need to download the tune from my car and email it to him so that he could see if he can open the file.

I have never needed to tune a vehicle before so I am completely out of my element here. Is it normal to need to do something like this? And how do I even get that file to send it to him?

The car is stock ecu and previously tuned on speeddensity.

yah thats pretty normal. You need to get a tactrix cable to interface with your ecu.

thank you for the response. From the ones I looked at online, it seems one end plugs in to the ecu, then there is a USB port to plug in to a computer, and there is one more connector which I am not sure what it is for.

Is this as simple as plugging in my ecu and downloading some software on a laptop to get the file?

Yes thats right. The Cable will come with a license for ecuflash, which is the software you will use to read, and write to your ecu. The cable will plug into your computer via usb, then one connector goes into your obd2 port and the smaller one plugs in right next to it. The smaller one is needed for reading, and flashing the ecu, but not for data logging.

Cheapest solution unless you can find one used.

This would only run through the EvoScan software correct? From what I understand you're better off with the official Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 and running EcuFlash for the reading/flashing part of the process. And EvoScan still runs using the Tactrix cable.

2008 and up you need a 2.0 for both programs.

If you have a 2003-2006 you can run a 1.3u to use both programs.

Is it different for the 8/9s? OP has an 03, so if he doesn't need the tactrix then he doesn't have to get it. I just thought the tactrix was used for both gens of evo.

any chance of the current tune file is lock by the previous tuner to prevent us from downloading it and editing it using the cable?

I really doubt he would lock it, because if he needed to make any changes he would have to completely remake the rom. You shouldn't have any issues once you get the cable and software.

Thats an easy one. Just run a dual map. You can switch over with ease.
