We are capable of doing dyno-runs at my school on rollers...it is simulated, though. You shouldn't be getting messed up tach readings if you hooked up your lead to your primary coil correctly.

ross already explained the reason for the messed up tach. i'm quite sure drt knows exactly what they are doing, they are a high end tuner shop

Yes, you can simulate it, but there's no replacement for airflow and drag. Not huge factors individually unless the engine begins to become heatsoaked or your car is built like a brick, but still...every hundreth of a second counts, right?

EDIT: Sorry, I'm assuming you were talking about the 1/4 mi as opposed to just a dyno pull. I think I misread that.

Allright I will leave well enough alone...geez I wasn't trying to say he didn't know his stuff. I realize he works for a high-end tuner shop...just was explaining something to everyone else who might not know how a chassis dyno works.

And this is why I don't put all my faith in dyno numbers!

I'm with you there, man. They are good for seeing powerbands, but the numbers just seem like bragging rights for the most part IMO.

I agree...they are also good to tune the air/fuel ratio with a wide-band. I like the idea of it as a tool along with an oscilloscope it helps but it won't tell EVERYTHING.

you guys make some good points. My biggest beef on dyno's is the unknown variable. Seems these days there is always something wrong with the dyno... either the torque is way off/doesn't exist... or the rpm is wrong... or the it is reading in mph vice rpm... or the tranny/clutch is slipping... car was to hot... etc. The list gets bigger and bigger it seems.

There is just no real comparison except on the track it seems. Even if the driver sucks... after a few passes the mph across the line will show consistancy and what the car is capable of. You can say there is always driver error or tires or mis shifts but those seem to effect the ET... the mph across the line on consistant runs tells the truth within a few tenths.

Gotta get these beasts on the tracks so everyone, including myself, will have nothing left to say but... DAMNNNNNN!!!

oh, sorry man. your right, there probably are some people reading this thread thinking "what the hell is a dyno??" thanks for the input

I think 1/4 miles are necessary to along with dynos to prove the strength of a car, but almost no one goes down the strip. i think there are only a handful of timeslips from turbo guys, probably more from n/a guys. People just aren't willing to go out to the track or even the dyno to prove something, no matter what they got on there car.

I would have gone, but getting to the test and tune events on Friday night would have been a nightmare around here in DC. I'd have to leave work around 3 to get there in time, and I really can't do that. Not to mention dealing with the $hitty traffic on Fridays. My times wouldn't have been accurate any ways, because I've never gone to the track, ever

really? never heard anything bad about them. but FYI, ross is the one tuning, drt is just where he gets his dyno runs in. now and then they'll help him with the timing and what not, but its mostly ross (which is a great thing cause ross really knows his tuning and his supercharger tech stuff)

Thanks, Green Psycho. I just like to explain things for people...so that they don't think us that are knowledgable are full of it. The one thing I like about dyno's is being able to test it without needing a roll cage at the track!
