Race gas is awesome

i felt sad that i havent been doing anything to my car lately so i decided to put some 100 octane in my car to see what it was like because i've never put anything above 91 before. so i put about 50% 91 and 50% 100 and drove off. i pushed it a little and it felt a tad faster, but not much so i was thinking that i just wasted 7 bucks a gallon on this thing.

so this morning im leaving to work and thinking that i should try it again, but i realized i was only at 9 psi. so i put it to 10 and tried it from a light. its unbelieveable how much faster this gas made it. it couldnt even hold traction in 2nd gear anymore, the tires just spun out at like 4500 rpms and i was just amazed at how much harder it pulled.

maybe for your next mod you should try some race gas!

Race gas is awesome, just watch your o2 sensors.

i also dont think race gas will do much if u can't adjust anything....or if u have basic bolt-ons

now run straight 100 octane and push for 12psi and adjust ur timing and tell us how it goes...if ur block can take it

Um...so were you knocking before hand? If your car's not knocking I don't see why boosting the octane would change anything...especially so quickly.

won't higher octane allow him to boost higher Hobie? I think that's what he's getting at. I called BS on it too, until I remembered I'd ventured into the FI threads

Yeah, but it doesn't sound like he did much but go from 9-10 psi, and it doesn't sound like it was tuned at all. So I don't see why it would make such a huge difference, especially if the ECU hadn't learned on the higher octane yet.

EDIT: Forgot you Cali guys get **** for high test too though. 93 FO LIIIIIFFEEE!! (or 94 if I could find a reasonably priced Sonoco that carries it)

So....were you knocking on 91? Have you checked? The Lancer has an onboard knock sensor (oddly enough). You don't have to get upset, but basically the same principle that applies to NA cars and octane applies to FI ones too. If knock isn't present and if no tuning changes are made, then there's really no benefit to raising octane. On the other hand, if the higher octane was simply preventing knock it would certainly make sense that you felt a significant power gain. If it were over time I could certainly see the ECU learning to accomodate for the higher octane too, but from your description it sounds like this was one tank. It just seems unlikely to me that the ECU would learn that fast (though it is a pretty quick learner).

I doubt you're going to want to spend 50-100 bucks to find out, but if you're ever on a dyno you should test it out with a similar mix.

well since the difference between stage 1 and stage 2 is about 40whp(looking at the dyno 180whp vs ~220whp), 1 psi might actually help. if it's like the evoIII 16g, that turbo is good for 25psi and efficiency starts slowly falling around 14psi..

it's pointless to run race gas, unless you have some source of engine management adjustable source. Also as long as you use UNLEADED it will NOT, NOT, NOT mess up any sensors.

I'm sure the 1psi helps too, but iono. I have no doubt in my mind that every psi of boost creates noticable gains on the Lancer because of my own experiences with a barely functioning turbo setup at 4-5psi max. So yeah, the 10psi thing doesn't surprise me, but I'm trying to determine whether the race fuel was the determining factor here.

EDIT: BTW, do you still have the ZE512's on? How are they? I had the 502's (the line that the 512's pretty much replaced), and loved them until I upgraded to Parada Spec 2's. Never missed them for a second after that.
