Yet another boost problem!!!

I called my mechanic and he said that my car is ready. New turbo is in and car is not smoking.

He test drove the car in 1st and 2nd gear. I asked him what boost it record it on my boost timer. He said it shows .35 (5 psi) bar but it should be .47 (6.8psi) bar because it's running from the spring.

Suppostly everything is welded nicely. What could be the problem?

I'm thinking of 2 things:

1) An exhaust a/r is .80 so maybe I would see full boost in higher gear?
(I doubt that)

2) Vaccum leak (The only thing that they took of was the manifold with the wastegate; that's the only vacuum I can think of going bad)

BTW: He said that 1st and 2nd gear is useless!!!

does your boost gauge have a built in vacuum?

the first 2 gears should be the strongest

I don't know if that's a fact or not, but on my car, 1st goes by way too fast and 2nd is the strongest and 3rd is also strong but only for highway on ramp pulls. I can't use 3rd to the fulles to the streets...don't want to get another speeding ticket

Real quick.. I'm guessing the .35 that you are talking about is bar not pound(s). psi is pounds per square inch

anyway back to your question... what turbo are you using? and who's doing the install?
I really don't know how it can be said that 1st and 2nd gear are useless... just like c900t16 said... first goes through quick, but my turboed lancer pulled pretty good through all the gears, so I'm thinking that something is for sure installed wrong. What are you using for fuel management?

1) yes .35 is in bar.
2) yes it shows vacuum but I didn't check that yet since I'll didn't see the car yet.
3) turbo was installed long time ago by me and my friend. Everything was fine until stupid ebay turbo blew the seals. My mechanic just change the turbo.
4) Current turbo is oem nissan z31 garrett turbo. It's t25 with a/r .80 exhaust.

What he meant by 1st and 2nd being useless was that there is still alot of power. My azenis are spining.

Got to love the torque from high compression.

Well you should probably be running about 6.5-7psi at the stock wastegate setting. I would try doing a boost leak test to see where there is a leak:

also, what are you using for fuel management and fuel delivery?

My fuel is fine and my car has been dynoed and tuned (emanage) before the turbo blew. 206whp & almost 230 torque at 6.5 psi!!!

My fuel: 460cc injectors, 255 fuel pump, bored fuel rail, fpr, and fmu.

sounds like you are setup pretty good
I would try the leak test and see if there is a boost leak somewhere because you should be able to see full boost in every gear if reved up high enough quickly, along with checking the connection on the LICP and UICP and make sure that your boost gauge is also working properly (is your 'boost timer' your boost gauge?). How is it idling?

Try a third gear pull. I don't know if it's the same with lancers but with WRXs and such you don't see full boost in first or second.

For now my boost timer is my boost gauge. My boost gauge is not hooked up yet. I won't be able to know my vacuum until I pick my car up.

First I'll check the vacuum line from wastegate to the turbo nipple. Maybe something is squizing the line too tight. I know that some people try to run the vacuum line from wastegate to the IM for better pressure. And definitelly I'll check the IC piping. That's what they were touching so I'll start there.

BTW: Is it true that if I had t2 flange and I weld a t3 flange on the t2 flange than that's increasing my housing?
Same thing was done to the exhaust side. Ebay turbo had some small 5 bolt flange and this current 5 bolt flange is little bigger.

I don't think it's leaking around the turbo since they did a pretty good job on it.

My turbo'd oz could see full boost in all gears... it's sad that full boost was only 6.5 back then

or any car. The load is greater in 3+ and boost will peak there.

Same thing with my friend's STI. 3rd gear and then he hit full boost.

I'll test drive the car today. If there will be more problems than I'll work on it over the weekend.

No point in hunting for a problem until you do the pull.
