turbo help

i just recently put a turbo kit on my 03' lancer es. it's a turbo specialties t25 intercooled turbo kit. i bought this used, but it almost new condition. anyway, when i put the kit it was seeing like 15lbs of boost from the guy before. i have the wastegate tied open as far as it will go, so i'm only seeing like 3-4lbs, 5 on a cold morning. anyway, my exhaust is popping when i'm hard on it and i have to get out of it. i can floor it in 1st, but then it pops right about 2nd and really bad if i stay into it in 2nd. i really can't drive the car hard at all, because i don't wanna blow up my motor. someone said it could be a fuel filter, someone else said it could be i need to restrict my exhaust. i had headers on the car before, so i have no cats and a 3" apexi n1 muffler. i'm looking to upgrade my setup, i have everything i need, rx7 460cc injectors, walboro 255 fuel pump, apexi safc, and just put on a new bov. just wanted to ask for a little help...turbo is new to me, so i don't know a whole lot about it, but i'm learning. i just want my car faster and running safely, with no worries about damaging my engine. so, if anyone can give me some ideas or advice, please do...i don't no of any turbo lancer around here in greenville, SC, so i'm reaching out for help. thanks.

Could be the BOV.
Could be an injector issue.
Could be a tune issue.
Could be a wastegate issue.

That's what I was thinking but from the sounds of it, more things could be wrong as well.

does it pop like a backfire? if so you could be pre-igniting the mixture in the cylinder.

ya my car is turbod too. Itl pop sometimes when im on it if i rip through a gear. I have 440cc injectors and walboro pump and im only running about 5 psi. i also have a wideband. i have used evoscan to try to figure out exactly what it is. Im pretty sure that it is just some unburnt fuel in the exaust thats burning up on the inside of the exaust. My car has been dyno tuned so im pretty sure that if you tune itl go away a little but expect it on the top a little when you get on it no matter what.

Okay man, time to update that avatar! LOL Well, I was fortunate enough to meet and know this young man in my town and was able to help out with the BOV install this past weekend. The setup is pretty nice actually; I had never known there was a cast manifold for the lancer! Guessing it's probably a Mirage mani, but it looks great.

Okay, about your issues. The popping is probably due to the car running just an FMU and stock ecu. The car is seeing rich conditions during the gear change and thus the pops. Oh, btw the car is automatic. He does have an I/C.

The exhaust you have is fine, you want the fewest restrictions on it as possible. 3" is prefect from the downpipe back.

Okay, now about tuning. Who has tuned their car on a SAFC? Is it possible on this Apexi unit? Besides this unit, what all would you guys recommend? ECU Flash? RRM piggy? Etc etc.

i basically wanted to know from someone, kinda what my setup was and if i use a walboro 255 fuel pump, 89-91 rx7 460cc injectors, and an apexi safc, if this was going to be an alright way to go to get a little more power out of my car?? i wanted to ask the popping in my exhaust to see if anyone else had this problem. a buddy of mine swears its the fuel filter and it's not getting enough fuel, because i go lean, but it seemed to clear itself out for him, so that's why he thought it was my fuel filter. anyway, anyone who's used an safc to tune there lancer, i just kinda wanted to know a little more about it, before i just have it put on. and if the injectors i'm going to run would be ok. i'd like to run 8 or 9 lbs, but i want to be safe too...this is my everyday driver, but i want it to run right and be a little faster. right now i'm going very slow because i can't put my foot to the floor without a pop from the exhaust and i have to let off...it's no fun at all. again, anyone with some advice again would be very much appreciated. thanks.

For starters you should have a wideband installed before you do any permanent damage to anything. You would be fine to run a Walbro, 460cc's and tune with an SAFC. But, please get rid of the Autometer A/F gauge. It serves a better purpose as a light show than an actual means of tuning.

ECU flashing involves refining the stock code to allow for a more ideal AF ratio. If you haven't tuned before, don't try it now.
