Gauges and Turbos

Ok first before everyone flames me...lol.... I'm new to the idea of putting a turbo or added gauges to any car. And don't want to waste money buying a bunch of gauges that provide info that is not needed...

So...my question is... when adding a turbo kit to any car, what gauges would you add and why?

Thanks

EGT (exhaust gas temp) & a boost thats all you need

for tuning purpes only once you get every thing dialed in you dont even need to look at them unless you want to impress your friends

Depending upon what kind of tuning you want to do boost and EGT are fine. You may want to monitor your fuel pressure as well.

yeah you would monitor it for heat reasons. You get into trouble when you start running High EGT temps

Your temps may raise slightly, but overheating is determined by coolant, not your EGT. You can burn at 1650deg and still not overheat your coolant.

BTW, boost, EGT and fuel pressure would be for monitoring, not tuning. If you plan on tuning using gauges then you'd want a wideband O2 and accompanying gauge. If you get dyno tuned you won't need one though because any decent dyno provides wideband tuning services.

the gratest reson for the egt is so that u can moniter the temp of the gas leaving the engine. if for some reason it starts to get to high the engine will detanate, then you have no engine. it is in my opinion by far the most important gague that u need.

Just to elaborate a bit further...

When your air/fuel mixture becomes lean, it burns hotter, and you will see a rise in exhaust temperature. So with an EGT gauge, you get first hand information on mixture health and it's especially important on forced induction applications since each combustion is more powerful. Also note that aftermarket turbo kits don't go through as much R&D as factory parts, so you have a high chance of running into part failures and blown engines. EGT gauge can really help you monitor your motor.

Of course you need a baseline to know what normal temp is for your car. Probe placement will also cause temps to vary. You need to know what your average temp is before you can start diagnosing lean and rich conditions with an EGT. That's why I said it's really not for tuning, but monitoring.

if i were you, i wouldnt even think about doing a turbo setup till you learn a bit more.

but..........

i have a question for all turbo lancers:
how's the wastegate? have you had any problems with boost spiking high, or has it regulated well?
