turbo and mass airflow sensor

turbo and mass airflow sensor

i just bought and had a friend paritally install (missing parts) what was supposed to be a bolt-on 1/2 day turbo kit. it would have been about 4 hours if they had sent me all the right parts.
i need to know, since there's parts missing and the place doesn't have them, what do i need to hookup the t-25 turbo to the intake (the metal intake manifold in the mid-top of the engine)? do i need tubing to the mass airflow sensor and then a hard to find square adapter (square to tube) or do i bypass the mass air flow sensor which is what it looks like road race motorsports did in their pictures on their web site. right now it leaks air from the turbo to the mass airflow sensor because we had to make due with what parts we had. also the check engine light is on and i'm wondering if this is because there's two oxygen sensors and only one of them is hooked up? the service engine light wasn't on for the first 20 miles. my friend used to be a performance mechanic but has never worked on mitsubishi before. he's done tubo cutting and welding so that's not a problem in the future. any ideas? i'd like to get this turbo working since it's phsyically on my car (2003 oz edition).

Took me a couple of times reading that to figure out what you meant.

RRM did not bypass the MAF. As far as I know I'm the only one with a Lancer who's not using a MAF at present.

You need piping. From beginning to end it should run like this:

Filter, optional piping (some just hook the filter right to the MAF onf an adaptor plate), MAF, into the inlet on the compressor end of the turbo. Coming from the turbo's outlet you should just run piping as directly and with as few bends as possible to the intake manifold while trying to keep a distance from heat sources if possible.

I think that should answer your question, right? The CEL is almost definitely because of the O2 sensors. I'd seriously recommend getting a wideband sensor, controller and way to montior AFR's.

Wow I love guys who are will to use their engine as a test bed for stupid kits. You are not afraid of damaging your engine? Do you know what you are doing? Hope it works out for you but sounds like you are in for a lot of grief wit that EBAY turbo kit.

here are some pics plus i will describe it to you.





You can see the air filter has the MAS attached to it. you need some sort of mas adapter plate else there is no way to get things attached.

This hooks into the turbo, the outlet then runs straight into the throttle body.

You can pretty much read what I posted about the intake and look at Vince's pictures and see exactly what's going on.

Honestly though, the fact that you posted this kinda worries me.

i agree andrew,

the fact that the car is running around with what appears to be a massive hemorage in the computer system (which could cause you to become lean) is scary.

what are you using to increase your fuel flow rate?? that should be your main concern. people who have made their own kit or got one of these ghetto kits blew out their motor because they wern't getting enough fuel.

other then that yea...hook up the MAS to a pipe with an adapter then put it onto the turbo.

As long as his compressor side isn't hooked up presently he should be fine. He'll just have a bit more backpressure. He can still run a normal SRI or CAI and should have no problems (aside from the CEL...but he should really have the O2 sensor in place).

I think Link was driving his car like this for a while too when he first got the kit. No harm, no foul. You'll just spool air from around the inlet and vent compressed air into the engine bay is all.

I have to say though, you're not gonna wanna do the compressor side till you at least get an FMU or rising rate FPR. Even then you're going to want to keep boost low to keep from freezing an injector if you push them too much.

if his turbo is hooked up and spooling but is just blowin air into his engine bay then he can over speed his turbo couldnt he? cause it will never reach its target boost and just spool forever right?

In theory yes. In reality...probably not going to happen. As long as it's lubricated and not overheating it shouldn't matter anyway.

turbo details and current status

i'm debating on whether i should mention what company i bought the turbo kit from because it's in dispute right now.
i've been told by a local speed shop that the CEL can be fixed by putting a resistor on the second o2 sensor. i have the full service manual and specs on what range both o2 sensors should be at. the cel code the car's computer is giving is o2 sensor is not reaching it's threshold.
it's pretty quick now but i think it's leaking, so i'm not feeling it's full kick. it's making a LOUD shhhhhhhh air sound when the turbo spools. the sound between shifting sounds terrible, but i'm sure it will be cured with a blow-off valve. i'm taking it over to my friend/mechanic who's going to check if it's leaking and try putting a resister on the 2nd o2 sensor to get the right reading.
the so called kit came with a fuel pressure regulator. at 6-9 psi (this t25 is rated at), i don't know if i need anything else. the next stage kit recommends, blow-off valves, intercooler, and aftermarket fuel injectors.
i just ordered a blow-off valve, boost controller (manual), boost gauge. i hear that i can boost up to 10psi as is, then up to 12 with decompression headgaskets and an intercooler. then i plan on replacing the pistons and rods to crank it up further. i hear this t25 turbo can handle up to 18psi.

wow....u need a new buddy your gonna blow your engine quick man your scaring me sounds like you one arnt alowing air to vent when u let of gas which if i remember right isnt good for the turbo , 2 missing a hella of a lot of parts and 3 , u really should read rrm posts etc about turbo they know the limits of this engine , im no expert i just know i wouldnt trust you with my lancer

i did not get it from ebay. i'm not sure why so much ebay bashing goes on but i'm not going to get into that. it's a company similar to RRM. i found out from their warehouse that the kit they sold me was for a 4g93, not a 4g94. did i mention it came with very brief generic directions (the picture of the engine wasn't even a mitsubishi) and no packing list or receipt? although the manifold fit perfectly and that was the hardest part to find or to have made. i'm not experienced in this (i'm a professional software developer, LAN admin, UNIX admin, computer hardware tech), but i was a part time mechanic in college and my friend did turbo mods for a living. he usually builds them from scratch and the only reason i bought the kit was for the manifold. the local turbo shop didn't even want to give me a quote on how much it would be to custom make it and said he would need my car for at least 2 weeks. it's going to completely work after alot of grief like you say, but i will have saved over $1,000 from RRM which i have nothing against. it just seems their price is a little high.

kit parts

here's what the kit contained from the top of my head (there was no packing slip) -

garret t-25 turbo
couplings, metal tubes which don't curve or fit right (was for a 4g93 according to their warehouse)
turbo manifold
fuel pressure regulator
braided oil line hoses with oil pan adapter
coolant hose and t-connector
aftermarket air filter with tube that fits to the turbo

what parts are missing for this stage 1 kit?
i'm very impressed with the power increase. it's a HUGE difference from stock. i use to have trouble making it up some hills in 4th and 5th gear. i think there will be a little more once it's tweaked a little more (with possible air leak and check engine mode).

not letting air vent?
isn't this what a blow off valve is for?
