Questions from an afar bro on upgrading Lancer

Hi guys,

I’m totally new to the forum though been reading through threads for a while, especially on Turbo and upgrade since my Lancer is reaching 70k kms mark.

As a brief introduction, I’m currently living in Vietnam (for those who don’t really know, its in South East Asia) where the automobile industry is far below par plus ridiculously high tax imposed on the running wheels (a brand new 2010 Lancer Ralliart Sportback is being sold here for 65k, excluding VAT and stuff, as a reference point). And thus the lack of proper tuning shops and stuffs.

My drive is so-called 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Gala 2.0 which looks exactly like the 05 Oz Rally but equipped with 4G94 SOHD 16 valves 2.0l MIVEC non-GDI engine, 4-speed automatic gearbox with semi-auto gearing changing capability (not the CVT one) at 120HP/130 ft/lbf torque. The car also have 2 set of disc brakes which I suspect to be same as the ralliart version since I bought a set of EBC GD885 10.1” for the Oz Rally of Amazon and it was not fit. Standard wheels are 15” alloy. I currently have the K&N filter installed and a Macro Axle-back (Malaysian company) with custom pipe welded to stock Cat.
I’m going on holiday to USA for 3 weeks tomorrow throughout NYC/Boston/Houston/LA and I’d like to bring back some mod stuff to push my car to a new level. I was reluctant between going turbo or NA in consideration of cost/local tuning capabilities and the performance improved.
If I decided to go with Turbo, is the TSI Superior kit a good start (1.7grand) given the supplied intercooler supplied with the extreme kit was reported to be a little too big to fit in in another thread? The RRM kit is obviously out of range due to the 5k price tag so I wonder if I can get the intercooler kit and fuel management kit anywhere else at a decent price? And one important question is that if my Auto Lancer deserved the Turbo upgrade? (It is my daily drive with 40km per day on average and the max legal speed here is 50km/h – I normally go 20% above that :-D).
If I set myself to N/A, what are the most valuable upgrades from a P/P viewpoint? I have chosen the K&N Typhoon SRI, RRM crank pulley, Fidencza Flywheel, RPW tranny cooler (will get it from Aussie), Walbro Fuel Pump 255lbh, Larger fuel injector (275cc vs stock 240cc), RPW fuel press regulator and a Magnaflow High Flow Cat. All others are tentative and your suggestion is welcome. I’ve noticed RPW promote their 4-1 Long Headers at AUD555 a good upgrade with a bored out 60mm throttle at AUD400 (AUD1,000 round up ~ USD1,000) a good start but I’m not sure of the benefit they’ll deliver. And how are they compared with the RRM coated intake Manifolds? Also is the RRM ECU piggybacks a good buy since I’m not sure if my Lancer is similar to your Auto OZ Rally and it turns out not, I’ll be damned!

Regarding the suspension, I’ll go with TEIN coilovers but not sure if the USD400 difference in price tag justifies the quality between the Basic and Super Street series? And how Megan Street Racing stands up to these two? I don’t need something too fancy for track race as there’s none here so would like to see the best valued in normal driving condition with occasional drag/drop. *
Apology for the flooded questions since I really wanna make the most out of my trip to USA onto my car. Thanks for all the input and please help educating the this afar poor Lancer driver.

P.S: any suggestion for a good physical store to walk in and discuss with a knowledgeable salesman in Houston or LA? Or should I just go online?

Thanks

if you want any more noticeable power at all your going to have to go turbo. dont waste money on NA unless its for looks or sound... especially bored throttle and all that stuff its not going to be noticeable.

since your going to be here for a short visit i would first look through the lancer engine drivetrain for sale section to see if anyone is selling their used kit for the best price. the evo 16g would be the best and cheapest option but u dont really have time to hunt down every individual part.

i guess you could go for the tsi kit but i havent looked much at it or heard much about it. if you do get it make sure to go easy on it for a while to warm it up and break it in the first thousand miles or so.

best of luck

Thanks guy for the words. I'm in the us now and driving a Dodge Avenger, rented of course. Anyway, I've been told that a turb'd car will get extremely hot if been driven at low speed consistently. In my world. We're driving at 30mph mostly with occasional hit of 60mph max. So should I still turbo the car or just go NA?

Please kindly help me deciding. Thanks

our motors are not really resonsive to N/a.. u will see Max of about 160hp witha fully built N/a setup. u really shouldnt have an issue with heat, turbo is the way to go. at low speeds not much powe tto play with but if u are able to open it up(at the track or highway) turbo power is where its at.
