If you don't already have a headunit, and you want a great mp3 player, I would go with the Alpine CDA-7894. I have it and it is terrific. It was my best investment yet, besides the boston acoustics speakers.

I went with the Alpine cda-7892 when I got my lancer and put XM radio in it. much fun.
also went with jl audio speakers all around.
going to get a jl audio 12w7 sometime after the holidays
using a jl audio 1000 watt amp from a previous car for the sub.
I need to get a lil 200-400 watt amp for my car speakers too.

but since ya looking to only spend a grand. get a alpine head unit. that's going to be about 300-400 for a good one with all the controls. some infinity speakers all around should only cost around 200. jl audio w3's are still good subs.

http://www.caraudiocrazy.com/product.cfm?ProductID=402

that appears to be 2 12" w3's in a box for $386... pretty good price... ya would just ahve to run wires to ya head unit. shipping on it is probably a b1tch however.

and there is ya grand

JL 12w6 D Series are discontinued. Meaning you can get them DIRT cheap right now and I think there the best subs that JL has put out. (mine doesnt sound great cuz i have a cheap headunit and cheap amp) But my boy in his WRX has one with a Clarion Touchscreen and a JL Amp 250/1 and that **** THUMPS and is VERY clean.

For subs, look into some smaller companies, the put out a product far better than JL for the price.

Adire Audio - www.adireaudio.com
Elemental Designs - www.edesigns.com
Image Dynamics - www.imagedynamicsusa.com
Digital Designs - www.ddaudio.com
Resonant Engineering - www.reaudio.com

I know there are some I'm forgetting, and of couse I'm well aware that someone is going to flame me for blaspheming the oh so holy name of JL.

As for a HU, Personally I like Alpine.

Amps, right now, IMO you can't beat JBL for the watt/dollar ratio. They're a solidly built amp, run clean, and they're underrated. They're also dirt cheap.

Speakers are a tough thing to reccomend. Personally I like silk tweets, a lot of people like titanium or alum. I find metal tweets too harsh. Comapnies like Crystal Audio, Diamond Audio, and the afforementioned Image Dynamics have some EXCELLENT products. Go with your ear though... whatever sounds better to you.

image dynamics is good ****. so are mb quarts. as for HU, i wouldn't worry too much about that. get the subs/speakers/amp first then if you have money left over look into a head unit. Eclipse makes good subs. for front speakers, i'd say go component and get image dynamics, they make the best tweeters i've heard. mb quarts are good too. if you have the money, i'd say go with a set of compression horns - they sound absolutely amazing, but are expensive, and big, which makes them hard to find a place to install. if you're lookin for more bass thumping than overall clarity, concentrate on the subs and amp. 1000 watts going to 2 eclipse 15" subs will give you more bass than you'll need especially in a small car like the lancer.

EDIT: as for amps....if you got the money look into Xtant. they look amazing but are kinda overpriced (but they are excellent amps). rockford fosgate is always reliable. kenwood makes good amps too.

DOUBLE EDIT: oh yeah, how could i forget soundstream. beautiful amps. pricey.
