in trunk neons question

ok i just want to ask someone's opinion who might know something.

i want to put neons (sound activated) in my trunk, connected with a switch. i dont' feel like running a new wire all the way back there, and i want to be able to turn it on with the trunk closed (i like to keep a seat down when listening to music for better bass in the car, so i would be able to see the neons with the trunk closed). i know that the remote turn on wire should be able to handle multiple sources, and the neon is only 5mA 12V. so if i put two tubes back there, and wire them up to the remote turn on wire going to my amp, there shouldn't be a problem with anything, right? just want to make sure, if anyone has some insight on this.

i figure i'll try it out anyways and if i notice a problem i'll just uninstall.

sounds good .. tis too bad that decks don't allow an 'external' device to be pluged in and have the ability to turn it on/off. That would be nice. Just plug in, wire and you have it remote wired into the deck, and also have a selectable switch in a function mode on the deck where you could turn it on/off/onlyonwithmusic .. i guess im dreaming :P

Cup I have a ported box with a plexi front in my trunk. It has one 8 inch(maybe next size up can't remember) green neon in it. It is wired to my remote on the amp. I alternate between both seats down and sometimes the larger side. It lights the cabin with a nice not so bright green aura. I don't see any problem with the amp pushing that extra power, it comes from the main anyways. I was thinking of changing out the color to red and placing two more under the dash or seats soon myself.

Let me know how two work out.

I'm gonna advise against powering anything other than your remote turn ons with the remote wire. Unless of course it's a relay. The "proper" way to do it would be to get a cheap relay and wire it up from the battery to the trunk using the remote lead to trigger the relay. Then you'll have 25 - 30a of power to play with in the trunk. More than enough to power multiple neons, turn on quite a few amps, and wonderfully safe for your headunit. (you can burn out your remote turn on, as well as some of the output circuits by trying to power extra items)

Just my $.02
You're free to do as you please.

i know the "proper" way to do it. i'm not concerned with that. i don't want to have to run another power wire just to put a neon tube in my trunk, which i'll probably end up taking out after a couple weeks anyway. i was looking for alternatives, but thanks for your opinion.

No need to run another wire... just use the existing remote wire as the new power lead out from the relay, split it in the trunk. Just don't try running the advertised 20-30 amps through it... a nice 5a fuse would do that line nice.

why would i bother running a relay if i'm going to fuse it? why not just run a fused line off the remote wire? the remote wire acts as a sort of relay by only turning on with accessory power. the fuse would prevent excess current from being drawn into the line. i'd tap off the remote wire and fuse it with say 10mA or however much the max spec is of the neon. that way the neon would not be allowed to draw more than 10mA off the remote wire.

I didn't say to run the power from the headunit, I said use the existing bit of wire as the output to aviod having to run another wire to the trunk. The relay would allow for more power to be run to the trunk, as opposed to the very small voltage put out by the remote turn on wire. You can complely avoid running new wires by tapping your HU power as the input. Then use the remote turn on to close the relay.

Total new wiring for the project, 1 self tapping connector, maybe 3' of wire (power & gnd for relay), the relay, a fuseholder and a little time.

But again, it's your car, do whatever you want. Though you're much better safe than sorry.

i still don't understand what you're saying. tapping the HU power as the input? my headunit is getting power up in the dash. the only power line in the trunk is the 8 guage power line from the battery to the amp, and the remote turn on from the headunit.

the remote turn on supplies 12V and can probably pull up to 300mA. if i run a fused wire off that that is not allowed to pull more than 5 or 10mA, why would that be a problem? i don't need 5A to power a neon light. i'm sorry i just am not clear on exactly what you are saying to wire up.
