Weight can be reduced mostly by using different material for the box. Use fiberglass instead of 3/4 mdf and you'll shave almost 1/2 the weight of the box.

im interested in this too, but more so on lighter speakers. I think they have those CF-like speakers or something, but what brand makes lightweight subs?

smaller magnets don't = high output of rms, thus your dilemma... Start with fiberglass, then just use one nice 12".

If you want good sound quality your gonna need more than 100 RMS. Aim for at least 400 RMS minimum. Like SLVRoz said higher RMS = bigger magnet. The JL W3V2 isn't too heavy maybe about 10 pounds or so...Try look into that. Has a 300 or 400 watt rms i believe. And fiberglassing is only light if you do it correctly, not packing it with resin. Turns out rather heavy if you do that AND it has to be at least 7 layers thick to withstand flexing so think about that. good luck

If you are getting 2 subs then 100rms per sub is more then enough, if you are going for one then I would definately push for around 300rms. How much do custom boxes usually weigh (the ones that are molded into the sides closest to the back of the trunk)? If that would make it much lighter then that would definately be something to look into. It will save you a ton of space and look really good, downside would be cost.

Look into some of the newer designs, Infinity is coming out with a high power subwoofer that uses neodynimium magnet structure to cut the weight by %70 and also uses a woven carbon cone and polymer basket. Not sure when they are coming out but they are on the way.

I think its already out, or at least Infinity is already using that woven carbon thing cause my friend got some speakers with that for his SRT4 and they were way lighter than stock speakers

Illusion audio nd10/nd12 are the lightest and some of the best sounding subs ever. They have a cultlike status so the price is high. An Image dynamics ID 10/12 is cheap and better sounding than 90% of the stuff out there.
