need help. CD player making fuz noise

This just started yesterday and it got worse today. Radio plays fine so im 99.9% sure its not blown speakers. When a cd plays (any cd wether it be a cdr or a regular cd). At random times the speakers just play static. Sometimes the static just completely shuts out the music. other times you can still kind of hear the music. I kinda noticed during some songs it only happens when certain notes hit it seemed. Coulda just been coincidence though. I went about two songs just a bit ago qith it being fine. I skipped to next song and it did it like every 10 seconds.. I recently dropped my car. Is there a wire that could have jiggled enouph to cause this? Anyone have any ideas?

I have not taken it apart to look. figured I would ask first. I really know nothing about Audio. Thanks. btw, its the oem cd player.

1. its your car secretly telling you to upgrade
2. aliens trying to communicate with you

but really it could be a scratched lense or maybe the cds are reuined, try bringing in something from inside the house and playing it while the car is halfway started, then maybe try to plug up a friends aftermarket cd player to see if yours somehow might have gotten damaged, i dunno what else to tell you just play around with it, take out that dash piece and jiggle the wires that might have gotten loose or something =/

Sounds like the lens is either dirty or got scratched - you might want to try a cleaning kit, but as others noted getting a new head unit might be a good idea. Plus, if it is stock then you can get some better features than what the car came with.

Only fuzzy when the CD is playing? No fuzz during radio operation?

Assuming both of the above questions to be yes...
The "eye" inside of the CD mechanism is dirty or scratched, as posted above. But, you don't need to mess with one of those little cleaner sets, they don't work half the time. No need to replace just yet either (but definately keep that as an option). You should be able to take the case of the headunit apart (will void the warranty on it, if any remains) and clean the problem area with Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Should just be a couple of really small phillips screws that hold the top on the case. Once you get that off, the eye is normally easy to find (I'm calling it an eye because that is the best description to use for somebody to identify it). Just rub a bit of alcohol around with minimal pressure from your Q-tip. Make sure to get the edges and everything. Let it dry out for a few minutes and put it back together. Try it in the car and see if it is fixed. If not, try it again. After 2 attempts, if it doesn't fix it, you will need to get a new headunit (most are not worth repair anymore).

OEM units are fairly easy to work with, so give it a shot if you feel up to it. If not, just bite the bullet and upgrade.

Does it happen right away and continue the whole time. Or does it start happening after the CD or car has been playing or running for a while. When you pull the CDs out are they really hot to the touch?

never - correct. I feel comfortable taking it apart so ill give it a try. I didnt want to upgrade to a new cd player because I want one with a monitor but dont have the $$$ for one right now... bleh! haha

Lancer08gtscvt - if the radio has physically been turned off for a while it doesnt do it. after about one song it will start it seems and do it a lot. Its seeming to get worse and worse. The cd has not come out hot..

Thanks for the help. Any other thoughts or info would be great!

You've got some pretty cold weather up there in Maine right now, don't you? I'd be willing to bet that what is happening is due to the condensation on the lense. When it is wet, dirt lands on it and then after a while dries out, becomes more of a crusty substance, and in turn screws up your entire CD listening day.

Give it a shot with the Q-Tip and alcohol. If you can't get it working, just temporarily get a $100 Pioneer from Wal-Mart, or let me know what you would be interested in and I can see if I have a wholesaler that can get it to me for fairly cheap.

well. i went for a drive today and at first it plays fine... then it starts doing it. At that point I took the cd and felt it.. It was very warm. If the CD is getting warm, Could that be the issue? What is causing the cd to get hot that quickly? It didnt take long.. mabey 4-5 mins while im driving.

If the unit is having trouble reading the data, due to scratches, dirt, and what not, it can cause excess heat.

Generally, every CD player that I have had come in that wasn't reading CDs or was giving a bit of fuzz could be fixed by cleaning. But, there maybe something else going on with it.

Dont they make CD's that have a brush on the surface of the CD to clean the lens in the CD player. Might be worth giving that a try before ripping the CD player apart.

Yeah, they make them; but from all of my experience with them, they never really work good enough to actually get things back to normal.
