Giving your Lancer a 6-speaker setup

I haven't seen anyone else do this in here yet, so I just wanted to bring it out that the lancer, at least in the 2003, you can install a 6-speaker setup. A pair of 4x6 speakers fit perfectly in the rear doors.

I just routed my rear speaker wires through the door panel, and used my head units rear outputs for the amp, and that powers my mid-bass 6-3/4's I have in the rear deck. I didn't want to sacrifice all of my trunk for a box, and the mid-bass speakers work well with 300w each, 150rms.

Maximum mounting depth for the 4x6 has to be less than 3".

4x6 seems pointless when you already have 6.5. The bass will be better from a 6.5 that it would a 4x6, and being mounted that low in the door you will lose most of the highs too.

The way you ran the wires is also not a very good idea. They will be bare and shorting out in no time being run like that. It would have been worth the extra 15 minutes to run them properly.

Now, if you wanted to fiberglass some shallow 8 inch subs in the rear doors, that would be a good project.

Not trying to bash your project, or anything like that. Just thought I would share a bit of input that might help you improve on your idea.

Dude, I ran the wires through the channel already existing for the door power, no frays happening here. As for the sound, they work fine for the rear...evens out the dead space a little and gives the rear seats a more even sound. You can't fit anything larger in the door without doing custom fiberglass...

What's that yellow wire in the top picture then?

Like I said, not trying to bash on your project. I just know from experience that:

1. 4x6 doesn't give much sound, especially when mounted that low in the door
2. Round speakers give much better sound quality.

If you like the way it sounds, that's cool. Everybody's ears work a little differently.

I know you would have to do fiberglass work to fit anything bigger in the door, that is why I mentioned fiberglass in my original reply.

I, personally, think an amp would have provided better sound.

Also, you may have problems with overheating the head unit later on if you are running 2 speakers off a single channel.

Just things that I have experience with since I have been in the business. I'm sure others will probably agree.

The single channel is just a temporary fix until I get my new head, but I don't see how running a 4-channel off of the rear output would overheat the head unit? The amps the one doing all the work...

As for taking offense, no offense taken...I'm not experienced enough with custom fiberglass work, and really don't want that much weight with the extra power and larger speakers. The original goal was to cancel out some of the dead soundspace in the backseat and get some more bass at the same time. I went with the midbass units because I find they have a better low range than most 2-way or 3-way (or 4-way). Eventually, I'm going with separate tweeters in the front dash and rear headliner to clean up the highs. I'm not thrilled with the front door panel placement for the speakers, as they tend to get muffled by legs.

The goal wasn't for getting the most bang out of the system, more of the cleanest most dispersed sound in the vehicle without breaking the bank with q-forms or custom fiber work.

The 4x6's from Powerbase have 75W rms, and are two-ways. They're the cleanest bass reproduction I've heard in a 4x6, and handle a decent amount of power. The location in the rear doors isn't blocked the way the front door location is, so you actually get decent sound from them.

The addition of the tweeters will complete the soundstage...

Missed the detail of the amp.

As for cleaner sound... you will get cleaner sound from less speakers. The distance variable between them all makes for different arrival times of all the sound waves. You end up with some frequencies getting canceled, some getting distorted, and the ones that do hit at the same time take presence from everything else.

Either way... as I said, if it sounds the way you like, more power to you. Hope it all turns out the way you want. Hard to make a call about a sound system just from looking at it.

I still am going to stick with my knowledge, experience, and training to tell me what it probably will sound like.

But, as I said... if it's what you like, that's cool.

Well, I never did care for the tweeters I've played around with before (Pioneer, Kicker)...and I am more of a fan of component speaker setups instead of the multiples (2way, etc), BUT, as you said, without customizing an encloser, the rear door doesn't leave too much...which is why I went with what I did. *shrugs*

I found that with the full-range speakers on the rear deck, people in the backseat couldn't hear you talk...the midbass has cancelled out that problem while still providing decent bass response without rattling teeth. I still keep the full-range, with the 4x6...although I would like a better option, I'm just doing a short-term fix for now...thought I'd share

What would be your take on doing the components in the front door such as: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...501&c=3&tp=106

and doing these for additional tweeters for the rear: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...001&c=3&tp=107

The midbass I have are like these, but an older model: http://www.universallcd.com/index.as...aign=SortPrice

oh, and btw, I'm not a pro I did the 4x6 installation a few years ago, and I realize why I left the wire exposed...those rummer grommets on the door channels are a PITA, and I don't have the tools to do it properly. The wires show no fraying or wear...looks like I gave them decent slack so that door use doesn't affect them.

Reminds me of when I brought my last car into a stereo shop to install some front speakers and do some other work. I had to retrofit baffles on the 6x9s in the back using a crapload of sylicone:-p His quote: "When I first saw it, I was like WTF, that looks like shiite...but it actually sounds decent, so w/e"

I'm definitely not an entry for stereo looks...my goal right now is for getting it to sound the way I want....then when I have the extra dough after the rest of my car mods, I'll get everything cleaned up. I know this must be like scratching fingernails on a chalkboard to you pros, but yeah
