Question 8" sub

I've seen a few 8"subs out there. Does anybody knows if there is one that can shell out over 500 watts?

Elemental Designs e8a should be able to take it.... But it's also $185 for an 8" sub... why so much power?

If you're looking for 8" subs, I've got some extras kicking around, still new in the boxes. Never got to use them for what i was gonna do. Only 2 of the 10 have ever seen power.

They won't quite handle 500w but they'll definately take 150.

Shoot me an IM if you're intrested and we can talk about prices and specifics.

While going to sleep last night I got thinking about my trunk and how much space my 12" is taking right now. I taught about making a hole in the rear arm-rest and build a box that would go right behind it with the sub facing toward the front of the car.

I would like to gain some trunk space but don't want to loose power.

Does Fostgate makes good sub

Any taughts on this?

Edit: I'm talking 500 watt peak, not RMS

The E8a is a "better" driver when looking at the numbers.

It has a much lower FS, and a wider frequency response. (It'll hit lower and cleaner than the RF) But it all depends on how much $$$ you're looking to spend. (I have no idea what the RF costs)

a kicker solobaric L7 would do nicely in there, specially since its square, would look better through the armrest too... also handles 450 RMS and 900 Peak, for roughly 230, but Im sure you can find better prices off of some pricegrabber.com type site
Also, althought I am not a big fan of it, the Sony XS-L81P5
handles 200 rms, and 800 peak

I just measured the width of the arm rest and it measures 7 inches. Of course, if I do go through with that project it won't be before I get a job It would though make a very clean job

Why not use the spare tire well? That is what I have ended up doing to fit a JL 12W7.

I can't use the spare well cause I have to put my hockey bag in the trunk, and I prefer keeping my spare tire

I'm on Kicker's web site right now and I am damn confused I'm looking at the specs of their S8L7 sub.

On one web page is says:
Max Rec Amplifier Power (WATTS PEAK) 900
Max Rec Amplifier Power (WATTS RMS) 450

But the owners manual says:
Compact box : 300 watts
Street bass box: 325 watts
SPL/Deep bass box: 325 watts
.33 cu.ft: 450 watts
.75 cu.ft: 450 watts

What the hell does that means?

solobaric

air space in a sealed box. It looks like you could use a very small box and still get good sound. A friend of mine had a solobaric 15" and the box was small but the sound was awsome. of course he was running a fosgate 1000A2 amp

Actually, I was wondering about the watts specs. How come they change from box to box?

Different enclosures effect the acoustic suspension, and thus have a very real effect on powerhandling. Most manufacturers underrate their products so that they won't have a need for posting multiple enclosure power handlings.

The .33 and .75 are sealed boxes, sealed enclosures offer the best suspension, and there's very little chance of a driver unloading except for under EXTREME overpower situations.

The other boxes they mention are ported enclosures. And while a ported box offers more SPL, you lose out on powerhandling, especially under the tuning frequency (where the driver will unload with very little power). Generally, the larger the ported enclosure, the more power you can use.

I've given your idea a bit of thought, and while it may work putting the 8" in the center console, you may want to look at downfiring, or side firing the woofer.

Personally, I would consider another option though, as I don't see the center console being the optimal position due to it's extra compact size and what lies beneath. I'd look at a cuthrough in the rear deck with a small enclosure beneath it. .33 ft^3 isn't that big, and could EASILY be made to be quite out of the way in the trunk (read also suspended from the rear deck), and with the driver firing directly into the cabin you wouldn't run into that many problems with rattle (if you renforced the rear deck)

Just a thought.

Would you mind explaining what is down and side firing?

What does lie beneath?

Do you mean free air?
