EVO HU install is a b*&$@

Yesterday guys, I went and bought the harness to install my pioneer premier DEHP-640 or whatever..(95-up Mistubishi)..catalog gives the same part number for 2002 Lancers)...i get everything in and put the stereo in, and it looks like crap..gap up top and bottom, So i try to put my trim peice on, and the stupid dash sticks out too far the get the trim to hang...So I go to Home Depot and get longer bolts and some washers...Used 4 #10 washers on each mounting bolt, and now it sits perfect, and trim peice fits fine..(radio just sticks out alittle on this car compared to what i am used to ) Oh well everything is going good, radio works...then I notice that when I turn my headlights on , my radio buttons light up fine, but then I turn my headlights off and they still stay on, but after about 1 minute they finally turn off...Next thing I notice is with the radio off, I can put my car in reverse and my radio buttons light up every time I put the car in reverse.....So i go and clip my orange Illumination wire ...and problem solved...but now My radio wont light up when its off and I turn my headlights on.(no big deal) but it still bugs me...So then I go and try to figure out the cause of it not working properly, and the next thing I now...POP..I blew my left side parking lights fuse.....So now I have to go to Walmart and get a new 7.5a minifuse...Put that in and I am back to normal...What do you guys think is wrong, as to why My radio buttons wont light up when I turn my headlights or park lights on?? I had it all wired right...Only thing I can think of is that this harness is not right, or it's not pinned out right....Maybe I will just have to deal with it not lighting up when its off and my park/headlights are on??

The illumination in the EVO is not typical. As an installer in the past, we avoided using the illumination wire. Kind of pointle ss for the separate illumination if you ask me. I doubt that the pinout is wrong. Either it will work or it won't. BTW, the EVO does use a standard Mitsu harness. Hope this helps.

Oh, by the way. They make a ISO trim ring kit which is designed for ISO mount cars like mitsu. Its a thin piece of abs plastic which fits around the radio to cover the gap. Can be picked up at either best buy or circuit.

kool deal....thanks for the info...so Hooking up the illumination wire is pretty much a waste of my time? I just hate that this is the first car that wont have the buttons lit up with the park/headlights on even though the radio is off ....Oh and what does ISO mean?

granted i don't have the evo, but from what i've seen, its exactly the same setup as the lancer. and that was the easiest install i've ever done.

get a harness adapter from best buy or whereever, wire up the hu, and just drop it in. no problems with illumination or anything else, and i've had 2 pioneer hu's in my lancer (8400, 6500) and they both worked great.

any one else have any funny issues with their after market HU's as far as wiring goes?? The harness should be a simple plug and play...I still think it's pinned out wrong...I hooked everything thing up perfectly...I dont think any wires are touching each other???

honestly, if you've done other harness installs, i'd have to agree with you and suspect something is pinned wrong... be it the adapter harness, or the pioneer harness. it might even be a defective hu, and that's kinda what it sounds like from the illumination delay you mentioned. you might want to see if you can exchange it.

i dont believe its a defective HU..ive had it in a civic...and my SRT, and now into the EVO...i think the harness that I bought yesterday is wrong, or pinned wrong...the harness number I got was a 70-7001. Mistubishi 95-up.... I wonder if I got the wrong one? hmmmmm...what adapter number is everyone else using?

OK i just went out and unattached the 2 harnesses from each other...on the 70-7001, it has 2 orange wires...the full orange one says Dash Light Illumination, the Orange/white one says dimmer on it...At first I hooked the Orange/white one up to same the colored wire on my pioneer, but no luck...so I then did the other one...tada...it works, but was the one that was freaking out when I put in reverse...etc....which one is the right one to hook up? I am thinking the orange/white one...maybe I just didnt get the wires crimped together good on it or something...I guess next weekend I can give another shot?

yeah, Im thinking the orange/white one is the right one. I just did my install about 3 weeks ago and I already forget. it's hard without it here in front of me, but I think the orange/white is the right one. Dimmer is what you want...
