How to make radio stay on with no key.

I've ridden in several new cars lately, and i noticed that they all have this feature that even when you take the key out, the radio remains on until you open a door. This is an awesome feature, and i was wondering if any of you audio experts knew how this was done, and if there was a way to do it to the lancer?

EDIT: I just researched it a little, and here is what it said for one of the cars:
"Retained accessory power, power windows and radio remain operational after ignition is switched off for 10 minutes or until a door is opened"

I know our windows can do this for 30 seconds, but can we hook our radio up to the same power that our windows get it from after the ignition is switched off?

Seems like there is a way to get at least 30 secs out of the radio. Hope someone can figure this out.

My solution has nothing to do with the door being closed or not, but you might want to give it a shot. If you power your HU directly from the battery instead of the harness (which is probably controled somewhere down the line) you could have your radio on all the time and turn it off manually when you're done

Just make sure you always remember to turn it off though. If not, you'll run your battery down eventually.

look at the wiring diagram and find out where the windows get power. it's probably from a processor or a relay. maybe you can tap into this.

otherwise, you'd probably have to run constant power to it and come up with a simple timed relay circuit. otherwise i'd say eh...

i really want to do this, and i know there is a way it can be done. first of all, cup, how do you make a timed relay circuit? also, i included the diagram of the fuse box. it has a relay for the power windows, but that is probably to control them, not just the 30 sec power after key is removed.

So how can i tap into that 30 seconds of power? Is there someone that installs stereos that knows about this?

I say just run the power to the HU from the battery.

There's another fuse box inside the cabin, under the steering wheel on the left. That's where interior power will likely be distributed to the power windows. If you tapped off that, you'd have power enough to keep the radio one a little longer and I'm guessing that there's enough current allowed on that circuit to also power the stereo, but don't quote me on that. Just a warning though, it's a pain in the *** to get to that fuse box and actually figure out what's what...

You will need several relays to accomplish this task. You have to tell the radio to stay on when ignition is on even though the door is open. Relay 1 activates sequence when ignition leaves circuit. Relay 2 goes in line with door pin switch. When door opens, it throws negative signal to relay which shuts off power. Don't have time to draw it out, but theres a starting pouint for you. BTW, if you are not familiar with much I just said, then this is not a job for you. Don't risk shorting out your car because you are lazy (I mean you want a convenience).

alright, i'm giving up on this task. thanks for the help, i just thought there was a spot that led to the power windows that i could tap into, but no one knows where i guess. its not that important anyway.

i know you said you give up...usually in the newer cars you can keep the stereo on with the key removed until you open the doors....so why not wire them up on the same relay that the headlights are on.....

I'm going to revive this thread. I know more about relays and think I can pull this off if someone can think of a working diagram. Any ideas?
