Can someone give me some advice?
I am looking at getting two 12's and making a custom box for the back of my car. All I want is a good amount of thump, not too much. So what do you guys think a good size set of subs would be? Is 800 watts too much for what I want or not? I can get a good deal on a set of 12's with 800w max so I want to get them but I need a little help from everyone here. Also, since I'm not all up on this whole area, what size amp would I need to power 2 with this amount of watts? Please help me out. Thanks
So 2 12's at 500w would be better. I want to go for two just becuase of the setup I am going with. It would look the same with just 1 sub. I gotta friend that had 2 12's at 600 and his car had a good amount of thump and it sounded good and he told me not to go with the 800 either.
Usually, the sound pressure difference between a 300 watt jump is not that much. You would save a little alternator drain if you ran a 500 watt amp, but be careful on how much power you use, as sealed boxes lack efficiency. What type of box are you using?

All I have to ask is why?
So your getting a good deal huh?
When blow that sub and buy another after the cost of the two you could have something good. My advice is jump on ebay and get something better. If all you want is a good "filler" bass vs earth shattering bottom dropping glass cracking bass, you should go Polk. I have a MOMO 10 chillin here waiting for ya 80.00 + s&h
As for weight being a huge issue....... **** guys our cars are 120 hp. whats 60 lbs?
if you got that much to worry about stick to the stock crap!
As for your amp and power situation, its all going to depend on the quality of the amp not so much the power. A clean singal is worth its weight in gold. In some cases a 500 watt amp is more powerful than a 1000 watt amp just like a sub rated at a 1000 watts can get its *** kicked by a sub rated at 300. Its all relitive.
Also you cant trust anybody in the car audio biz as far as you can throw them. Power ratings are wishey washey.

Bottom line is you can get alot better sound quailty for the same or less money.
I know your getting a good deal but you should do a little reading.

Don't worry about the max wattage that is going to very from manufacturer to manufacturer... sony explode 800watt 12" for under $100 dollars or a 600watt Alpine for $350... peak power means nothing you want to know the RMS values of the Subs and the get a matching amplifier that will power them sufficiently with good clean power.. I would always recommend Alpine or JL but there are a lot of good companies out there. I would say pioneer subs are less than mid range in quality. Anyways do your research and find out actual rating #'s for your gear.
In 2006 all manufacturers will be required to put the RMS ratings and their product... its about time.
