theres a difference, SPLs and dBs are different, then you have dB SPL =] dude im an audio major, and 118 dB is the threshold of feeling and 140 dB is the threshold of pain, the DECIBELS of an jet taking off is roughly 122

your partially right, but mostly confused, lol, SPL is sound pressure level, which means the amoutn of pressure built up in an area, so the SPL in a car is actually HIGHER because of such a confined space, your receiving the LOW (bass) waves and HIGH (trebble) waves at the same time at the same volume (decibels)
oh and for all you people who drive at speeds greater than 40 mph with your windows open, your causing damage to your hearing too

i was lookin at subs at best buy....i saw 2 that sounded really sweet. the guy workin said he had 4 in his car, with 4 amps or something like that pushin them, all 4 were 12" he said he hit like 220 DB or something....and said at like 210 or 212 ur ears bleed. thats crazy.

i know this kid that had an insane setup.. basically he set it all up and blew out his windows, so, he puts in shatter proof windows, cranks the system again and blows out his ear drums

That guy is a ****ing moron if he thinks that he hit 220!!!
!!!!!!!! The world record is held by a van with TREO subs and Directed Amps and it hits right around 178db's!!You should laugh and point at that guy for even claiming that

Yes there is a difference in SPL and Decibel. Decibel is the unit of measurement used to indicate the relative intensity of sound. While SPL (Sound Pressure Level) is An acoustic measurement for the ratios of sound energy. SPL is rated in decibels. "Sound is measured in SPL while decibel is unit used to specify how loud it actually is." My car when I hit 156.8 was metered for SPL. Windows were closed, doors, everything, meter mounted in car at windshield. This is how you meter for straight SPL. Oh, and the SPL Human Threshold for pain is actually 130 db. A gunshot is equal to 150db. This will roughly give you an idea of how loud 150 db is.

Oh and yes no one is hitting 220 db anytime soon. This kinda SPL would require more power then anyone nowadays is yet to use in any install. It is extremely hard to hit high SPL Levels. An example straight outta my MECP training is that if you have a 100 watt stereo and you decide to double the power, a meter will only notice a minor increase in volume (typically no more then 3 db.)

i'm sorry to interject and sound like an *******, but TURBOit, why are you crying about what other people like to do? "why don't you guys listen to it at safe volumes?" well, some people, like myself, prefer to enjoy our music at much louder volumes. you sound like a mother. if you are, then i'll let you slide. but, i highly doubt it. and... next time i'm driving down the highway, doing 90mph, with my windows down and system blaring... i'll be thinkin' about you buddy ;-)

well actually, if u had the windows open and blasted your subs, wouldn't the pressure EQUAL OUT actually? just kiddin, but i gott say, blasting music is too much fun

My 2 x 10's and 4x25wrms amp can pull 139.8 db.... anyone tried it with a system so small ?
