Thumbs up Back Door 6.5" Speakers / with pics

For those of you that have questioned, or contemplated, or imagined. I just added 6.5" speakers to the passenger doors and it sounds kick ***. Now my Lancer has 4 - 6.5" speakers and two 8" sub woofers. (Yeah, 8", I want quality bass not quantity bass) The whole install took around 6 hours, but it was all new territory for me, so it shouldn't take as long for someone else to do it.

Actually the longest part of the install was cutting out the pattern to mount the speaker in the door. Soon as I find my digital camera I'll post pics.

Yeah, that's my next piece. Right now I have my 8" in the back windows (temp installed). I'm going to rebuild the whole back deck to propery install the subs and tweaters. I'll get some pics up, I haven't cut my rear doors, so you'd never know they were there. Untill you turn on the system, of course. Movies are kick *** with this setup.

Yes, two 6.5" in the front, two in the rear, and two 8" subs in the back window. Yeah, we can't find the digital camera, so I'm going to go out and buy one. I'll post the pics in the next four days. The biggest issue for me was finding a speaker that wouldn't interfere with the window.

Right now the speakers are pretty mismatched, I just started working this ride. The front two are kenwood, and the subs are out of a pair of bazooka tubes. The rear two are from Dual (I'd never heard of them, but they work for my application). I had some kenwoods in there at first, but I had to put a bolt in the window track to keep it from hitting the speaker magnet on the way down. With the Dual speaker there was no problem.
I think I'm going to switch everything to Pioneer, I like the indash DVD/MP3 player they have.

I did mine with 4's in the back doors so the speaker would be visible from the outside of the panel. The 6.5 components I was going to put in were way too big for the back panel.

This is to answer some questions.....

In an effort to answer some questions, and get some more feed back.

I’m offering up a little more info on how I pulled this off. I’ll add the measurements of the rear door panel later.

* A head unit with RCA outputs for the front, and rear. (Don't really need a sub output, but it helps if you’re trying to do an 8.1 system)

* A set of speakers no bigger then 6 1/2" with a mounting depth as small as possible. (You can use a bigger speaker, but you'll have to put a nut and bolt in the window rail to prevent if from hitting the speakers) (My rear windows have an express down feature, just like the drive. With the bolt there the motor just stops, it doesn’t keep pulling, so you won’t kill it)

* Either 2 - two channel amps, or a good four channel amp.

* ATLEAST a 1/2 Farad Capacitor – Unless you like the abusing your battery

Right now I have six speakers in my car, soon to be eight (Don't really have need for a sub at the moment).

The two front run off the regular speaker wires coming off my radio, and since the RCA outputs on a car radio are never off (unless you turn them off), I'm using them as well.

The two in the rear doors are running off the Front RCA outputs off my radio. That line is run through a crossover and an amp, and the speakers are setup for mid-range.

Here's where I haven't decided what to do next.

Right now I have two 8” subs in my back windows running off the Rear RCA outputs. This Line also runs through a crossover and an amp, and the speakers are being used as subs, but are crossed at 65K (I think true sub range starts at 40K, maybe 35K) with a low pass filter on.

The rear speaker wire outputs from my radio aren’t being used. This is where I’m still up in the air.

The plan is to rebuild the rear deck and make it possible to mount 6 x 9’s there. These would be run off the rear speaker wires, and probably be 3-way. The 8’s would be moved to a custom center console for the back seat. It might replace the center seating area completely, and make the car only be able to seat 4, not 5. But that would hinder any back seat action if you follow me, so that plan is still in the design stage. I’m also going to redo the trunk seal, and better aim all the speakers to get the most out of my system.

Hope this answers the e-mails about how to do this, and what I used.
