Which sub to get for a clean rumble?

no BOOM, just a nice rumble.
Im not worried about how loud it is or how low it goes. I have a DVD player in the car so Im wanting something clean and clear. I was thinking of either getting one 10" or two 8"s. Which would you choose and what brand? I already have Infinity Ref. 6.5" two-ways pushed by a 400x4 Ample amp.

10 years ago or so, sub design was a black majic. Now there are any number of computer models that make designing them much easier. With that said, if you're not going extreme, any well known brand sub will do the job rather well. JL audio makes awsome stuff, but you can get a great sounding sub for half the cost.

The most important thing is to make sure the box is matched well with the sub. Youre best bet is to get a box designed for the sub. I know MTX, Bazooka, and JL all have these. I've heard some awesome sounding no name systems.

Get a JL 10W3v2, give it 200W, set the crossover at 80 Hz, you'll love it.

Hey

You should ask around on the caraudio.com boards, they can hook you up with the best box/sub/amp combo for your application. I put a system in my car a year ago and was looking for the same thing you are. Sound quality, not necessarily boominess and ended up going with a sub made by Elemental Designs. These guys know car audio and their EdK series is one of the best values around.
You're really not going to find a better sub for the money. I'm really pleased with mine, they sound good but are plenty loud (I probably should have just stuck with one). I don't listen to alot of rap so I needed a nice balanced sound and they delivered. Good, responsive customer service too. Check them out here

Good luck!

Agreed I have used JL more than any other sub in multiple vehicles...you can't go wrong with JL. I usually pair my sub(s) up with MB Quart components. This time around I'm running an Eclipse sub (aluminum cone) and Diamond Audio components...super clean!

if you want SQ rather than SPL. go for the Image Dynamics IDQ12 Dual 2 Ohms. Clean and strong, yet very suttle. They did a great job on designing them.

An 8" rockford would be good. If you want to go all out and get the best, go for a MB Quarts sub. They're really expensive though, considering a like 4" speaker made by them was going for 300$.

8" = nothing below 30 Hz unless you spend way too much time designing the box.
