I have:

WideBand
Boost
Oil Pressure
Exhaust Gas Temperature ( EGT)
Water Temperature...

Good ones to have would be Oil Temperature and Fuel Pressure as well.

It's always good to have enough, just to know you are able to monitor them.

What is necessary: nothing

What is a REALLY good idea: boost

What is good to have: EGT

Everything else is nice to have. But you honestly don't NEED anything. Boost is the only one that I'd say you truly should get. EGT is good for tuning, but you have to know how to interpret the temp. Everything else like the pressure and temp. gauges are good to have if you want to know what's going on in your motor, boosted or NA.

I'm monitoring my boost levels only with my RRM turbo kit, but I want to get EGT, Oil Pressure, and Oil Temp. I haven't really justified the cost yet to buy them because *knock on wood* RRM's turbo kit makes my car run better than the day it left the showroom. I haven't had a single engine problem with it. Temps range from -10F in the winter up to 105F degrees in the summer, and with this non-IC kit, its been amazing. If I were you, I'd go with a boost gauge first, then an Oil Pressure gauge. I consider those the two most important to monitor how your engine and turbo are running.

My sexy Defi D-gauge for boost monitoring in the RMR Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel Pod. ^_^

The one that you can afford, is the size you want, has the boost range you want, and features that you like.

There is no best gauge. That's like asking "what's the best car?" - it's all opinion.

If you want a good brand name, grab a Defi. If you want a good gauge you can afford, go with Autometer. If you want a "cool" brand-name gauge, GReddy and HKS are always popular options.

All in all, they're going to do the same thing. Just remember, though - you won't be pushing much boost. So don't get a gauge that goes up to 30psi because you'll never use it. Some companies sell gauges that max out at 20psi. That'd be good, since you'll probably never run more than 10. And the most extreme Lancer I've heard of only ran 18.

Sorry for the mini-novel...

D-gauges were individual.

I say "were" because they're no longer made. So you'd have to check with vendors to see who still has them.

If you want a non-control-unit gauge from Defi, you'd grab their new line, the Blue Racer gauge. Click here

I have Stewart Warner boost and oil pressure (pressure to fill the second pod in my A-pillar). Cheap, accurate, looks good, the red LED option match the stock gauge color. Too many gauges are Rice and pointless, no real way to watch them all and drive at the same time. And if you have a oil pressure loss do you really think you will be looking at your pressure gauge?
