well...i dont know where u can get them from cause I havent yet, But since you have to get a new MAS u might as well upgrade to a GSX MAS.

Id run a search on the web, and if u want a lancer one again maybe u could try a junkyard.

Likely a salvage yard.. You need to take the numbers off the top of the MAF (the square cover on top)

you can use any mitsubishi MAF (97-04??) that matches your wiring harness (plug) but be aware that if you try to use a different model their calibrated differently, some bolt up to the airbox differently, and some have slightly different outlets to fit on the intake pipe (MAF pipe)

Your best bet is to get the part that is correct for your car if you cannot afford to have too much downtime.. I do think the GSX MAF sensor will work on the Lancer though..

I'm confused. I know it as a "MAS" (Mass airflow sensor) ... bigvinx called it a MAS too, but other people are calling it a "MAF" (M? A? F?)... are they different units?

Also, what would be the benefit(s) of using GSX maf/mas over a lancer maf/mas?

I think that people just use MAF as mass air flow, I dont think they are two different things.

Either junkyard (if your lucky) or the for sale section of this forum. Aftermarket, not that I know of. Maybe a MAF eliminator. They used to be available for 1st gens.

Ok.. MAS is a generic term.. MAF is a typical term for a hot Wire sensor, and VAF is the actual term for the Karmann Vortex sensor..

MAS, MAF and VAF are typically used interchangeably..

MAS (I think) is Mass Air Sensor
MAF is Mass Air Flow
VAF is Volumetric Air Flow

They all basically function based on measuring the volume of air through the sensor, some also measure the intake temp to calculate air density (Air Mass)

MalibuJack: Awesome, thanks for clearing that up. What are the benefits of swaping to another vehicles MAF , like a GSX's MAF?

Oh, www.ramchargers.com sells a MAF translator that might work.. it uses a GM hot wire sensor and a calibration/translator tool.. But it does take a bit of work to get running correctly.

It depends, if your lancer is turbocharged, you will find the additional airflow through the sensor can throw off the stock MAF or you may hit a restriction.. The MAF sensors on the turbocharged cars like the GSX had a bit more headroom.

Keep in mind you'll likely need an S-AFC or some sort of tuning piggyback to adjust things a bit, since each MAF sensor is calibrated for their purpose. Be aware that some mitsubishi MAF sensors are wired identically, but have different plugs.. so you may need to become creative.

The easiest solution for someone who just need a replacement is to buy a new or used one that is correct for the car.. But at least you know you have alternatives.

For a lancer MAF replacement, look for the 97-02 Mirage w/ a 1.8 liter.

For a 2g DSM GSX/GS-T MAF, you'll need any sort of AFC device and splice wire harness alongside plug connector.

Maybe a MAF eliminator. They used to be available for 1st gens.
==================================
They are HKS VPC, and they will cost you your next child, instead of an arm and limb.

a MAF translator
===============
Only a 97 Mirage 1.8 liter is a plug and play affair, because it has the same plug connector as a 2g DSM.

+98 Mirage 1.8 liter, lancer G94, 3g eclipse G64, and some 6g72 have the smaller plug connector. You need to splice wire and plug harness.

I do believe some modern 6G72 (+G74) have different MAF system. I can't really tell . . . looks like hotwire yet looks like MAP too. The same for the RA, I can't tell. I know the 4G92 uses a MAP.
