Icing the Intake

Has anyone heard of this before? I was talking to a mustang guy the other day and he was telling me that sometimes they throw a bag of ice ontop of their intake about 10 minutes before a run and they leave it on there until after the run. it sounded like BS to me but i dunno.....

I've heard slimiliar methods applied to fuel lines but not air intakes...my concern would be with mid-to-high humidity climates, won't there be condensation develop inside the air intake???

EDIT: After rethinking my previous post, moisture inside the intake may be an issue. Yes, condensation WILL FORM on the INSIDE of your intake. I'm not sure if it would be enough to screw with your MAS, but I'd hold off on it. Plus, I would think that any gains would be negligible.

The colder the air the more fits into the combustion chamber, then when you spark it, the power developed. Have heard/seen this done at local dragstip. Illegal on local oval track.

They were talking about it in the Latest SCC. The Eclipse that won the 1/4 did just that... threw it on the throttle body until it was time to run, and then put it back on afterwards. Alot of this had to do with the extreme temps that they were running at, and wanting to prevent the engine from overheating, and breakind down, which has happened on more than one occasion during the USCC. I'd do it only if I was going to do alot of hard racing.

Don't put it on the intake piping, but, the throttle body.

The theory is colder air = more condense air hence -> more air + more fuel = more power

yeah i think everyone pretty much knows that... hence the use of a CAI... but using ice as a different approach is the topic here
